Hello! Normally I spend all my time in the ancients forum, as I predominantly collect ancients, but I recently acquired my first medieval, and all of you here seem like the type of people who may also appreciate coins like this. ENGLAND, Henry III (1216-1272), Penny, 1.32g., Voided Long Cross Coinage, Class 5g, (1251-1272), Walter - Canterbury, crowned facing bust of Henry, HENRICVS REX III, rev., voided long cross with trefoil of pellets in each angle, WALTER ON CANT, (N.997; S.1373), very fine. Ex York Coins Ex Patrick Finn. Ex W. J. Conte Collection Ex J. J. North Collection (ticket included). Ex Glendinings Auction, June 15th, 1954, part lot 266. Look at that provenance list. It is a who's who of top English/Norman coinage experts/researchers and dealers. Anyway, I will probably be picking up more medieval and 16th century European coins in the coming months, and I hope to share them with all of you. I'm sure the ancient coins forum is not the only place that appreciates medieval coinage.
Yes - very nice coin! Being British this line is my main collecting aim. I originally set myself the goal of one hammered coin for each monarch from William I (The Conqueror) through to The Commonwealth (after that milled coinage took over). So far I have this complete bar: William II (Rufus); Henry IV (Bolingbroke) and Edward V (The Prince in the Tower). When it became too difficult to fill the remaining gaps I extended into Saxon kings and I now have 7 of their coins back as far as Athelwulf in about 850 AD. It is a great collecting theme, but it does get expensive towards the end!
