Hey I bought a 1854 seated liberty that was counter struck with "Browns Hotel" I bought it for $15. I was just wondering about them and if they're worth anything.
They are called counter stamped coins. There are some on here that specialize in them. I'm sure they'll be around Generally they were used as advertising back in the day as a coin passed through many hands and usually circulated in the same general area for a long time. Think of those cars you see wrapped in an advertisement for a business or a Vegas taxi. Same concept.
Thank you for the information. I figured I have never seen one and didn't know if I'd ever see one again, so I bought it. I collect for a deep historical appreciation so whether it's worth anything or nothing I still think it's cool.
Where is Bruce? he is the resident expert. Until I buy the reference on them, then I'll be an expert-in-training
