Interesting to see different slab mounting approach by PCGS and NGC for the unusual Africa-shape of the Chad high relief "Big 5" 5000 Fr silver 1 oz coin. I like the PCGS version.
Barely any luster - like a gun metal silver gray color, with some dark accents in the creases and folds. There was a 1 oz and 5 oz version (latter being 25000 Fr coin, and limited to 555 total issued). Wonder if PCGS can slab/mount the 5 oz version with its same unusual design. The slab would have to be thick, too, because both versions are high relief. I bought several of the 1 ouncers (unslabbed) as gifts to young grandkids and nephew/nieces.
Unless things have changed, the PCGS oversized slab is quite thick. It's like holding a brick. At least coins I formally owned were. The NGC one is thinner, unless it's a very thick coin. I prefer the NGC oversized holders myself for this reason. Unfortunately, unless a coin is round or square neither company has what I'd call an attractive option.
Very interesting items. Thanks for sharing @Revello. Back in the 1970s I lived in Chad for a couple of years ... and collected all the Chadian coins as well as the nearby states, BWA, etc. Might have to update my collections as your post intrigued me.
If you're interested in getting the 1 oz "coin", the Bullion Exchanges (seller on EBay) offers them for about $80. They come in a nice box with plastic mold holding the coin (packaging looks nice, especially if given as a gift). The PCGS slabbed one I posted was offered on EBay for $150 (which I purchased, as I had not seen one slabbed/certified before) -- figured the extra $70 cost above the price for an ungraded one was worth it -- covering the cost of grading and the custom-made slab coin holder and fact that the grade was MS-70. Whoever had the coin graded also paid for PCGS TrueView.
