An addition to my colonial copper collection Was extremely happy and surprised to score this one for a $20 (28 with shipping lol)
Want to double your money, lol? Great deal, I think? I actually don't know it's value, but for a coin that old, in that condition, I think it sounds like a fantastic deal! Glad for you.
I got it for opening bid (had placed a bid of 57 and was ready to go to at least 75... She's one of the nicest raw examples i've seen for sale... as for value.. NGC has this to say... Don't get me wrong I've seen plenty of them up to vf selling in the 20 range but XF and above the price rockets... I'm damn happy I scored this one dirt cheap
Nice example, these Pennies circulated extensively, and certainly come much worse than this... Now you just need its big brother
This series (1d, 2d) of copper coins, struck in 1797 by the Soho mint on new steam presses became known as 'Cartwheel' coinage owing to their size, as well as the pronounced raised rim containing the inscriptions.
This was a response to years of light weight counterfeit copper coins that had flooded the English economy for almost 20 years. The idea was, here is an honest two penny (also a one penny) coin that really has two pennies worth of metal in it. Unfortunately the coins were so big and cumbersome that they were impractical.
good question... as most of my colonial coppers are raw in airtites it will likely join them, but it is a tempting coin to have graded lol
For those who have not seen these coins in person, here is the two penny piece next to a quarter. It is three times as thick as a quarter. Here is an example of the one penny 1797 piece.
