Actually been awhile since I added an empress coin of some sort. The latest addition is an Antioch Denarius of Julia Maesa from a small lot I bought. They are not super rare but a bit scarce. This issue lacks the "diademed" on head, which makes this even scarcer it seems. Only thing I don't like is the horrible weight, 1.97g. Curtis assured me it's fine though & the edges are a bit porous. Julia Maesa (218 - 225 A.D.) AR Denarius O: IVLIA MAESA AVG, Draped bust right. R: IVNO, Juno standing facing, head left, holding scepter and patera. Antioch mint., 218 - 220 A.D. 1.97g 20mm RIC IV 256 var. (diademed); RSC 20a
Nice coin, very well centered, and I like its simplistic design. Regretfully, @Mat I do not have an Empress Maesa. However, I eventually see myself pursuing the Empresses once I complete some other subset collections that I am having fun with. I think at one time you were discussing my capturing this Lady.
How about a family reunion? Here is her sister, Julia Domna, which I finally received today. Now, the pictures above are with my cell phone, and they do not capture the golden hues around the figures and legend, which are quite visible in the hand. So for that effect, I will use seller's photo. I don't know why cell phone cameras are so lousy capturing certain types of toning.
I got my Julia Domna Isis with Horus Baby reverse from the @Mat connection too... The Man has QUITE a harem going on...
Nice capture @Mat ! I do have a Maesa/IVNO too but from Rome. As one would expect style is waaaaay different Julia Maesa, Denarius Rome mint AD 218-220 IVLIA MAESA AVG, Bust of Maesa right IVNO, Juno standing left holding patera and sceptre 3.48 gr Ref : RCV #7750, Cohen #16 Q
Yes Chris & Brian, both are from me. Still got many other Domna's that I have never shared. Nice one, Q. I have the rome type also. Julia Maesa (218 - 225 A.D.) AR Denarius O: IVLIA MAESA AVG Draped bust right. R: IVNO Juno standing facing, head left, holding scepter and patera. 3.3g 20mm RIC 254 RSC 016
Here's my Maesa from Antioch. AR denarius under Severus Alexander Antioch, AD 218-220 3.2 g, 18.0 mm Obv: IVLIA MAESA AVG, bare-headed and draped bust, r. Rev: FECVNDITAS, Fecunditas seated l., with plant and scepter; two children at side. RIC 380; Sear 7749; BMCRE p. 540; Cohen 7
My only Maesa (low quality). I don't have an 'attribution' so if anyone has a pointer? (Edit) Possibly . . . Julia Maesa. Augusta, AD 218-224/5. AR Denarius (19mm, 2.57 g, 7h). Rome mint. Struck under Elagabalus, AD 218-220. Draped bust right / Fecunditas standing left, extending hand over small child and holding cornucopia. RIC IV 249; Thirion 395; RSC 8.
One of my references must have mentioned that because I have it on the coin info. Now I'm just as curious as you are because I purchased the coin some 15-20 years ago and I can't remember the circumstances of the attribution.
