Got this in pocket change. Is this some kind of mint error or just weird PMD?

Why are the rims on the obverse smashed down and widened? There is no sign of abrasion on Roosevelt’s bust so I don’t think someone just ground thing coin on a concrete floor using their foot.

It's a mix of Die Deterioration, misaligned die strike on the Reverse side and circulation damage :yack:

Here are some closeups with the microscope…
Wow. So that obverse die was way past time to be replaced when this was struck. I’ve started to learn to recognize die deterioration, but this one is the most severe examples yet pointed out to me so far.

Bad dies, PMD and circulation wear.

Couldn't also be a different planchet? The mints do mint for other countries as well...yes? Did you weigh the coin? It should weigh 2.27gm.

Sure. Not in this case, however.

Most 1985-D dimes look like this. It's the result of a combination of inadequate planchet upset and excessive die convexity.

I wouldn't call that die wear. I think Mike has it right, it simply wasn't seated well.

The planchet was properly seated within the striking chamber.

The planchet wasn't properly upset, then, I see, that explains the broad rim.

That explains the rim. But I was referring to the appearance such as the lettering that shows being struck with deterioration.
But I see the original question was about the rim.
