Cable? What's that? For the last year I've been using my Smart TV with an Amazon Prime and Netflix subscriptions, and saved so much money over cable. Satellite and cable TV are just too expensive, most of the programs on TV are really bad, and I am sick of having to watch a quarter hour of commercials every single hour when I am paying so much money. All one really needs anymore is a smart TV and one or two subscriptions for a fraction of the price of cable and satellite.

I don't know much about any of these "new" services and might look into them if they aren't very expensive. Thanks!

I pay $9 for Netflix and $20 for Amazon Prime with an add on subscription to Starz Network and a subscription to another service for British movies and TV shows, and foreign films. So that pretty much covers most movies and TV shows in the US and most movies and TV shows in the UK for $29 a month vs. $120+ a month for cable or satellite TV.

As for smart TVs,I just bought a 4K resolution 42 inch screen Smart TV last month for $300. They have gotten cheap as dirt.

Just be aware to research before you buy. We got a "smart" TV a couple of months ago and will get netflix when we have watched all of the Amazon Prime.

We used to have a sat box which allowed us to record two programs and watch a recording at the same time. This "smart" TV allows one recording and we have to watch it if the TV is on. Not happy, but I watch very little TV now.

Fortunately, the only person in my life who really has an interest in them is my partner, and that comes from a love of Greek mythology. Most other folks think it's cool to have something so old, but really don't ask too many questions. A lot of people ask how they relate to the Bible. *Sigh*.

  12. You've got an in with your denarii of Titus; although I don't think Vespasian is mentioned by name in the NT.

Some of my friends are profoundly bored by ancient coins - as I am bored by talk of football, or stamps, or guns, or mixed martial arts. A few friends who have passion for history seem genuinely fascinated by my ancient coins. You need to have some emotional investment in the subject in order to "get it".

If someone showed me their Star Wars toy collection, or their collection of James Bond movie posters, or David Bowie LPs, I would be similarly fascinated - since these are things I'm very interested in.

IMO people with zero interest in history are a little boorish.

In addition to "sapiosexual", I had to look up "neologism". My wife is almost never impressed with my ancient coins, but fancy new words sometimes do the trick. Keep 'em coming :bookworm:.

People still collect stamps? There is a hobby that has all but disappeared thanks to email, online billing, and digital stamps. People are just not as exposed to stamps as they once were.

Even though I don't collect stamps, I still find them interesting. Stamp collecting is how I started. Coins sort of followed naturally after that. However, I haven't collected stamps now in almost two decades.

The only stamps that might be interesting are really old ones - stamps that say something about the events of the time. Not the ones made specially for collectors, which I don't consider to be real stamps since they weren't used for postage. I have the same attitude towards proof sets of coins.

There are still demand for old stamps. I also started with stamps at a young age as I got a lot from my parents, sometimes for the heck of it I check eBay to see what they're going for. Surprisingly there are some Chinese stamps that command quite a bit in price.

I always found history/geography/zoology/astronomy extremely interesting. My Grandfather back in Germany actually got me into these, before I entered grade one. My first hobby was stamps, my fav. were ones produced from 1840-1965. Then my Dad got me into coins, back then I had little $ to spend, so I stuck to Canadian 1 cent thru Silver Dollars. Once, I finished high school and got a "job" working for a lawncare company, I started to spend my money on gold coins, my first acquisition was a 1969 Biafra 5 piece Proof Set from Valcambi Mint, it cost me $1100.00 so I had to work 4 weeks to buy it. Then fully trained, I started working for myself in lawncare, working long hrs/ now I got to know NFA and started bidding in their auctions/ then with Stacks/ so on. During this time I also built up a spectacular butterfly/moth collection (which I am now selling to buy more neat coins.) At present I just get my coins thru sixbid site, bidding on stuff from CNG/Kunker/Hess-Divo/Sincona/Rauch/Baldwins etc. I also collect US/Canada obsolete banknotes....

I enjoy collecting modern gold. I could not when I was younger...cost was prohibitive, so I enjoy the mystique of capturing them now.

I will let @panzerman get all the old stuff. :D
