Do you think he will ever do Morgans again? If you could pick one coin for him to re-create (that he hasn't already) in a fantasy overstrike, what would it be?
He might do a morgan again as he loves them and is a VAMmer at his core. Right now though, his overstrikes have an overall theme, a Type Set. So think of coins that are supposed to be in a type set then cross reference that with overstrikes he's already done and what's left are the series he still has to produce overstrikes for. He is nothing if not methodical.
According to this page, he has already created the following: Indian Head Cent Liberty Nickel Buffalo Nickel Mercury Dime Roosevelt Dime Standing Liberty Quarter Washington Quarter (misc. varieties) Capped Bust Half Dollar Barber Half Dollar Walking Liberty Half Dollar Franklin Half Dollar Kennedy Half Dollar Morgan Dollar Peace Dollar Eisenhower Dollar ASE Oregon Trail Commemorative Half Dollar $20 Confederate
I'd love to see a 1906 or 1934 $20 Saint-Gaudens and 1906 or 1934 $10 Indian. I bet they would look spectacular in both Gold and Silver.
He should over strike those 1880-O Micro O Morgans that the TPG'S finally determined to be counterfeits!
80-O Micro O Morgans are genuine, as are 99-O. The contemporary counterfeits with a micro O are 96-O, 00-O, 01-O and 02-O (two different obverses). Dan is a huge collector of these, and if he were to ever stray into producing fantasy micro O counterfeits (not the fantasy-dated 1909), he'd be shooting himself in the foot (and elsewhere) as both a collector and a businessman.
Messy beat me to it. I was about to ask for a link about the 80o c.counterfits I envy @dcarr's c.counterfit morgan collection. One in particular!
How about a 1964 Walking Liberty Half Dollar? Or maybe, a 1964 Franklin Quarter? Whats the future for the coins? What is the future for ANY "novelty"? Answer that question and you'll know the future of the Daniel Carr Overstrikes.
Chris - I thought you were being hilariously funny suggesting that Carr turn out some counterfeits to ship to China. Kind of like "getting even" for the multitude of counterfeits they create and send here, to the US. I don't think Cascade was implying anything about your opinion. He was simply saying that Carr's ethics would not allow him to deliberately create counterfeits targeted for China, or any place else for that matter. I don't think he was "attacking" you. JMHO - Jack
Chris didn't read anything into it. He's just obviously in the anti carr camp. Most people don't understand his high morals or the artistry of what he does that surpasses "novelty" by a country mile or just don't like the fine line he walks but never crosses etc
Thanks for the clarification, Cascade. I have a great friend who has the most amazing Carr issue of a (fantasy) Peace Dollar. The level of artistry is quite amazing. I've never felt that he (Carr) was trying to do anything other than honoring specific, classic designs, which most people can never hope to own. I think I've also heard that he uses minting equipment that he actually purchased from the Denver Mint. I don't see any harm in what he does. He's totally upfront about his product and he has survived for a long time in an area that could be considered pretty risky. Jack
