The 15c. coin from the Bahamas is THE strangest denomination I can think of.I have got a couple of them,as the Bahamas is a British Commonwealth member state. Aidan.
Drusus, that may be a weird coin in terms of design, but the denomination is not a strange one though. Scotland had some extremely unusually denominated coins. Aidan.
This is not the strangest coin I have seen, but it is one of the most unusual that I have in my collection. Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen 1/8 Ahmadi riyal, 1374 AH, on pentagonal planchet, Y#14 Minted in San'a
Somaliland also had 2 weirdly-denominated medal-coins - 400 Shillings, which are both bimetallic & square. They depict both Yasser Arafat & Yitzak Rabin. These were struck in 2005,but aren't listed in Krause. Kenya did issue a bimetallic 40/- coin to commemorate 40 year's of Kenya's independence. The Principality of Hutt River has issued some $30 medal-coins at various times. Aidan.
Speaking of weird denominations: Haiti had 2 coins with a denomination of 6 1/4 centimes : one in name of emperor Faustin I and one of the republic.
Venzuela used to have a 12-1/2 Centimos coin right up until the 1960's.Venezuela is in the process of carrying out a currency reform,& a 12-1/2 Centimos coin will be reintroduced, albeit, with the inscription,'Republica Bolivariana de Venezuela' (Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela) edited - such comments have no place here Aidan.
The 'reform' is basically a division by 1000, such that 1000 bolivares then will be 1 bolivar now. They have been issuing coins with 'Republica Bolviariana' since 2000. Here is an example I have of the old 12 1/2 centimos, ironically from The United States of Venezuela, lol:
You can find the details of the Venezuelan currency reform on the website of the Central Bank of Venezuela, which can be found here; www.bcv.org.ve. Here's an article; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Bank_of_Venezuela . Aidan.
Portuguese India had issued some quite interesting denominations.. like 3 Reis, 4 ½ Reis, 6 Reis, 7 ½ Reis, 9 Reis, 12 Reis and 15 reis..
Biju,Portuguese India also had coins for 30 Centavos,3,& 6 Escudos as well. The same thing applies to East Timor. The Indian Princely States also issued some extremely unusual denominations as well. Aidan.
