at our hotel in gatlinburg there was a pretty good sized play ground. i detected it and found $2.25 in loose change. nothing really special, just regular stuff. best things were an 1960 cent and a 1965 quarter. there was also some snack and soda machines nearby so i decided to put a nickel in and hit the coin return button to get a different nickel. got a 1969S. also did quarters and got a bicentinal. also bought a $1,000,000 bill for 50 cents! what a deal!
I found an old Standing Liberty Quarter in the backyard of an old house. I asked the owner for permission to hunt his land. He was doing one of those quick flip houses so as long as I didn't tear up the yard he didn't have any emotional attachment to the land which was nice and he lets me keep what ever I find.
Sounds like an interesting day anyway coinlover. I haven't been anywhere off of my family's property with my detector yet, nor have I found anything worth mentioning. I've got 2 brother-in-laws who are veteran detectors down around Jefferson City though, who have invited me to go with them some time. If I come across anything good I'll keep yall posted.
This is my 3rd season with my Whites detecter. I've done well finding modern stuff but only two silver dimes and two wheat cents, all from the 1950s.I've only hunted schools and the few city parks near my home.
coswho: Keep up with that Whites. I use a DFX, go out as often as I can. Nothing much lately (gold or silver) but, I still search.
I am looking for a decent quality detecter. Is the White brand a good choice? Any of you pros give me some advise on what to look for? Thanks in advance.
no need to start out with a expensive detector. i just got one at walmart for $200. it works great and tells me whats in the ground before i dig it up. it detects pretty far in the ground too.
Bullsquid, In my opinion, the White's brand of metal detectors are about the best you can buy unless you can afford the $4,000 + price tag for a Minelab GPX 4000 which serious Gold Prospectors go after! I have owned quite a few White's metal detectors since about 1979 and have found lots of coins, rings and other collectible and non-collectible stuff. When I worked and lived in the Florida Keys, I found a 1953 (my birth year) Franklin Half Dollar on Sands Beach in Key West that was some 3 or more feet down. I also located a hollow spot in the entrance (which is about a 10 foot long archway) of the old Fort just off White Street and let the Officials (it is a State Park and kept up by the Key West Horticulture Club) know that I thought that there was a room or some other kind of void underneath the entrance. Well, it took them a few weeks to get the approval to dig up the entranceway into the Fort and when they did, they found a chamber with several cases of Civil War rifles that were still packed in grease. They quickly shipped out the rifles to the State of Florida for their' Museum, to the Civil War Museum and to the Smithsonian and I did not even receive a thanks. Oh well, I have been treated worse! I currently have a White's 6000/D Series 2 and have already found some coins and a Railroad spike in my yard. I am almost certain that the Railroad actually ran in front of my home during the Civil War and that Union and Confederate Troops probably marched through and maybe even battled in my yard. One of these days, I will get around to making a grid search of my property and hope to find some real nice Civil War relics! Well anyways, I am not saying that the White's metal detectors are the best, just that they have been the best for me! It is all in what you are comfortable with! By the way, you can usually find some decent metal detectors on eBay and sometimes can pick them up cheap at yard sales and even Pawn Shops. Good luck! Frank
I agree with Frank. I am currently using a DFX, and have had the White's top of the line since their Eagle SL-2. (Got that about 1989). Stay with Whites and you can't go wrong.
Thanks for everyones input! I did see a White's 6000/D Series 2 on E-bay. I make take a shot at it. Looks brand new with many extras! I have been wanting to search my property for quite some time with a dector. I live in a century home in Ohio and I bet I come across some interesting finds.
You bet! It took me over an hour to get to the coin as the water kept seeping into the hole, so I had to build a dam of sorts along the water line and pack it down tight, just to keep the water from seeping in. The tourists must have thought I was crazy, as I had to lean so far into the hole, you could only see the top of my butt as well as my legs and shoed feet. Frank
Bullsquid, You might want to check with the local Pawn Shops as they sometimes take in metal detectors on pawn! You can check out as many yard sales as possible but finding a metal detector at one of these is like finding a needle in a haystack. However, if you did find one at a yard sale, it would probably be really cheap. I recently read some forum talk about metal detectors and one guy stated that he picked up one of the higher dollar White's Goldmaster Models for $14 and another one picked up a DFX Model for only $4. You can bet that I will be watching yard sales much closer than I used to! There are some websites with forums where users can advertise to sell their' metal detectors, so try everything you can to find the best deal. Frank
Frank, You ain't just a kidding! Although the postings were (I believe from 2006), I liked to choked on my cookie when I read them (twice). I tried to find the postings but couldn't find them without spending hours looking for them. However, below is a link to another one where this guy picked up two metal detectors, a White's 6000 Di Pro and a Smart Tracker XR8 for $4.99 each. The posting is in one of forums on 49er Mike's Prospector Cache website. You just never know what deals you can find unless you look and ask! http://www.49ermike.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=191&topic_id=1&mesg_id=1&page= Frank
