For those out there who were disappointed about no United States Postal Service booth at the last 3 ANA conventions (Rosemont, IL all), despair no more. The USPS returns to the ANA bourse floor at Anaheim. I asked show officials in what capacity this would be. Good news - both shipping stuff home from the show (heavy stuff like books or auction catalogs, especially) and souvenir cancels of show "covers", for both of us who care about that stuff. For the first time since 2012, I'm not scheduled to do a Money Talk at Anaheim, but I am exhibiting for my first time ever. I will have a Money Talk "in the can", alright, in the iPod, in case of a no-show. This is the 125th anniversary of the ANA, Jeff Garrett is President, Kim Kiick is firmly ensconced as E.D., and I think that means it's going to be top-notch and fun. Wait, does that Florida group own rights to that? There's a Tuesday night 125th Anni reception, Wednesday Sundman Lecture luncheon complete with a Legacy Series interview of Sundman himself, a Thursday night Numismatic Literacy Guild Bash, and what promises to be a Friday night Banquet and Silent Auction to remember. (My son and I are doing Disneyland Wednesday night.) If you're there on Tuesday, opening day, look for me near the registration desk. I'll be in the ANA blue shirt. The rest of my assignments are open, but most of the show I'll be toting a screaming yellow Pelican photo case which will contain (gasp!) my photo gear and cables and junk, not coins so much. If you're staying until Friday, look for the opportunity to get Jamie Franki to sign stuff. Jamie designed the show medal (colorized this year - ugh) and designed the 2005 buffalo nickel reverse and the 2006-date Jefferson nickel obverse. He is generous with his time and pen. This is my son's first trip west of a line drawn through Rosemont, IL and Huntsville, AL, and he's going to get the whole southwest desert experience up close. After the show closes Saturday, August 13, we head to Burbank for the night, then on Sunday, it's Warner Brothers studio tour, the Dodgers and Pirates, and crawl aboard the Amtrak Sunset Limited for a 48 hour trip to see a lot of where that wall might be going up someday. We end up in 'Nawlins' where I will touch the ground in my 49th state of visitation. Only Alaska awaits. (Flyovers don't count, only boots on the ground.)
Health permitting, I wouldn't miss it. Even if I weren't so "involved" with ANA, I'd make that one just because the flight from HARRISBURG is so cheap and convenient. And by March, I'll be about "wintered out".
March in Florida is very nice.........It's great for me because I get to take in two big shows, FUN in January and the above mentioned. Gonna have to do some saving.
I'm thinking VERY seriously about FUN Ft. Lauderdale in January. No conflict with NYINC next year, and I have a Southwest Airlines voucher that doesn't have an infinite shelf life.
I'll se ya there kurt. Should be an epic show! If you've never been to a Medieval Times dinner show there's one in Buena Park near Knotts Berryfarm. A fun time if you like jousting and swordplay etc. If you need any recommendations of things to do with your son let me know.
Swords? Really? I thought that in Watts the blades are slightly shorter. I once installed a one-hour photo lab in L.A.'s Chinatown, and an even earlier one in Hollywood proper, so I am a little Southern California exposed, but that was decades ago. My strongest memory is of cracker box buildings. As for jousting type stuff, we have the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire every autumn just one exit down the turnpike. Seen one moron with a long spear on a horse, seen 'em all, I say. Nice wenches though. (They call themselves that, in character.) I caught the winter FUN a couple of years ago when it was where the ANA will be next March. Hard to not have a nice time in Orlando, unless you go into the wrong bar on the wrong night. Too soon? Okay, the resort/convention district, then.
I think they upgraded their weapons tech a while ago lol but to be honest not all parts of Watts are bad. Unfortunately it's picked up a bad rep over the years.
In sure @The Penny Lady® will unless her hubby isn't doing well. It's close enough for her to go home every night
Look at this as a good excuse to become a member. ANA may not be flawless, but it's what we have for a national organization, their commitment to the furtherance of numismatics isn't in question and we really ought to support it.
I kind of agree but the cost outweighs the benefit for me. We'll see. I'll go to the show and see if that changes my mind
Just get the cheapest level. It's only like $35/year if I remember correctly. Speaking of it, I think I need to renew soon. I might as well go for the 3yr this time and get the ana labeled ms69 ase
But even 35 doesn't benefit me much. I don't want to read electronic versions, I don't want to borrow books from their library (I like owning), and I don't have enough money to grade coins through ngc. See what I mean? I'd rather buy some coins. Furthering numismatics seems good, but the leaders seem like big wig dealers who just want power. Sorry for the cynical view, just being honest
I'll be at the show Wednesday through Friday early afternoon doing imaging, then I have to fly home, catch an abbreviated night's sleep before a 5 hour drive to Des Moines on Saturday for a wedding, after which we drive another 5 hours to Champaign, IL, on Sunday morning to move my daughter back in for the school year, then 3 hours home.
They may not have any left!! I renewed a couple of months ago & got one!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
