Obv.: la ilah illa Allah / al-amr kolluhu li-'llah / la quwat illa billah ("There is no god but Allah. All power belongs to Allah. There is no strength except in Allah").

Now that I'm after medieval coinage, I couldn't pass up this medieval Islamic coin. The Almohad Caliphate was the last Islamic Caliphate to hold Iberian territory. They were a Berber tribe in North Africa which came to power after overthrowing their Almoravid rulers. Under their leadership, Islamic armies saw terrible losses to the Christian kingdoms in Iberia, shrinking Muslim holdings in the peninsula to a confined area in the south. In 1238 Iberian Muslims had enough, and seized power to form the Emirate of Granada, the last Islamic kingdom in the Iberian peninsula, which collapsed in 1492 under the forces of Ferdinand and Isabella.

Ah dang. I just realized I am not on 'the list' anymore. JA probably got tired of adding me in since I wasn't bidding on anything!

I really like the Islamic coins I just don't know enough about them to get some yet.

Nice squares, don't know much about those coins. Closest thing I got is probably some Indian coins.

    Thanks

There's really not much to know about these coins. No ruler names and no mint marks. So all one has is the history of the Caliphate that minted them. In this case, I like the Iberian connection, as my ancestors were Spaniards.

I disagree! There is much to learn. What was this particular coin used for, what was its denomination. Where did the design begin, when did it end? Why? Where is the source of the metal? Who is the antagonist of this culture, what epic battle took place during this reign, what city was founded? If we don't have a date-what style is this in? If it doesn't have a mint, where is the closest mint that is known to have made these maybe a clue will be given as to the ones that have no mint, where made? Where like examples found, how are they dated? Why would Christians imitate the coin? Fun, Fun.

In all seriousness, you make some great points. I will have to research some of that in due course. I'm not sure how much research is available on these at the moment. I'll see what I can find. :watching:

I do not have a nice one but I do believe that collectors in the US might be interested in this horrid little issue (blanca) with the initial of king and queen on each side. They are a dime a dozen in poor grade and next to impossible to find nice. There are really nice gold coins with their portraits.

F is for Ferdinand; Y is Isabella. I believe they were first issued after Columbus sailed so he did not have a chance of having one in pocket when he discovered whatever it was he discovered.

I don't have any of the above but I think this fits the "Spanish" theme of the thread:

    Charles III
, Viceroyalty of Peru, Spanish Empire

    AR 2 reales
    Obv: CAROLUS . IIII . DEI . GRATIA . 1780, bust right
Rev: HISPAN[IARUM]. ET IND[IARUM]. REX. LIMAE (as monogram). 2 R[EALES] M.I.(name of assayer), crowned Spanish arms between the Pillars of Hercules, the arms adorned with a ribbon with the motto PLVS VLTRA ("further beyond")
    Mint: Lima
    Ref: KM 76

I, as someone of Spanish descent, also feel an ancestral connection to my coin.

One of the very first coins I bought when I got back into collecting in 2007. Spanish 8 reales.

Still in its ICG AU53 Slab, lol.

Scratches are the slab that cracked and got damaged in the mail.
