hi again, so i picked up a few mint sets at a goodwill auction and got my first special mint set! i am trying to figure out why the half dollar looks very white compared to the other coins? and the penny simply looks, splotchy and is multiple shades of red/brown when viewed close up. anything worth taking note of, or just something these sets do? as always, thank you for any help and input!! im quite enjoying my new hobby hunting for cool coins!
Because the Half Dollar is 40% Silver. The Dime and the Quarter are Cupro-nickel Clad and the Nickel is a planchet of Cupro-Nickel.
no, not much, and yeah i agree it looks rough. i honestly enjoy the research and history of each piece more than anything right now so it served its purpose.
I hear you. I have several coins in my collection that are there mainly for their years and collect for the history.
These hard plastic sets do have a the opportunity to "breathe" with changing temperatures, unlike the heat sealed cellophane packet used in other years. I note your question is regarding the two end coins.
thank you kindly, for whatever reason i thought i read somewhere that the silver part was more the core of the coin and i thought it wouldnt show like that, my bad lol.
It’s all in the holders, they’re not vacuum sealed, that explains the discoloration in the cent (copper tones like that). As for the 40% silver half, the toning didn’t yet set in.
1965–1970: outer layer of 80% silver, 20% copper clad to core of 79% copper, 21% silver; totaling 60% copper, 40% silver.
You score anything cool on those goodwill auctions? I've looked at the coins and records and it seems like people overpay for a lot of that stuff.
Hard to tell but looks like you may have some machine doubling on the cent i.e. Liberty and United States
yeah definitely hit or miss on the goodwill auctions, mostly overpriced but sometimes its stuff you dont commonly see so i jump on it.
