Once every few weeks I put a $20 into the car wash quarter machine and then bring the coins home, go through them all and then use the quarters over a few weeks time washing my car once a week. This morning I got the $20 worth of quarters and tonight I went through them all. Nothing too special but I did get four that are in great shape for their age. The last picture shows the 74’s edge. Looks really like how thick and square a proof usually is.

Two Bicentennials that are both in really great shape, in one shot with the coin machine. And then the other 74' and 65'. All in really great shape. Got to wonder if someone had the quarter rolls laying around for decades and then just decided to use them at the carwash. Or, the bank handed out really old quarter rolls to the carwash owner and he just stuck them in the machine.

This is the same carwash quarter machine that I got all three of my quarter proofs (84', 76', and another one I can't recall right off the top of my head). It's like coin roll hunting but through the quarter change machine.

Very unlikely. Coins in this condition never circulated concurrently. Sure, in '76/7 it was possible to get a few samples like this but these groups are widely dispersed and worn now. You simply wouldn't get such a mixture. The FED and mint rotate their coin stocks so there is virtually no chance at all of getting a lightly worn 1965 quarter much less a handful of such coins.

It is a virtual certainty that someone is dumping these from a collection to recover their face value. The quarter machine is close to the point they are being dumped. That it has happened before implies that it is an ongoing event but it could be two different dumpers.

If you find out who is filling the machine you could trace it back to the source bank by that time there may be no more.

Dumps like this gradually filter away from the source and by the time you see them they are usually loners and only AU condition.

These dates represent the lowest wholesale prices of clad quarter rolls.

Even nice choice coins like the '65 are hardly worth the postage of shipping. Sure it's a very scarce coin but even after 58 years they still aren't being collected so nobody knows it.

I'm collecting nice gems whenever I can. Especially if they're already slabbed.

I believe the market is going to turn for Gem early clad quarters (65-85).

    I couldn't agree more.

But I've believed this since about 1975. Now I'm a tired long and like whoever used to own the coins in the first post am just spending anything that can't be wholesaled at a good price or is Gem.

That nice attractive '65 quarter would have bought a loaf of bread when it was issued and gotten a little change. Now it takes a handful of them to buy a loaf.

Don't underestimate some of the later Gems. They can be quite scarce as well.

None of the eagle reverse clad quarters is common in MS-60 but there's no demand. Almost all of them are really tough in Gem but there's no demand for them either.

Someday they'll probably all be appreciated.

My brother actually owns a car wash as a side business. One holiday we went to his house and in the corner was 2 five-gallon buckets filled to the rim of quarters. I asked if I could search them in hopes of looking for those elusive "W" quarters. His immediate reply was something to the effect of, "Nah, I don't have time to wait for that. I'll just turn them in to the bank." Alas...maybe next holiday.

Next time you go to the carwash to get your quarters, bring four $5 bills and three $1 bills.
See how good of a bill reader your car washing place has.
Cash in the 4 $5 bills and then the $1 bills in that order.
Someone I knew consistently ended up with $27 instead of $23 :wideyed::p like an ATM.
Seems the reader would after four $5 bills read the next $1 bill as a $5 ?? :D

I actually know the owner personally. But he doesn't (or didn't seem like) he knew a thing about coins. I had mentioned to him that I had got a few "proofs" from his quarter machine. He didn't seem to know what a "proof" even was or that he cared. What I do is, I'll bring my own quarters to the place and while I'm there, I'll pull out a zip lock bag, feed a $20 into the changer and bring the quarters home for closer/thorough inspection. I will then use those quarters to wash my car for a month and then when I reach the end of the stash, I'll repeat the steps, getting another $20 bag of quarters while I'm there using the last previous stash for the carwash. I had to explain to him what I was doing, because he didn't seem happy seeing me take $20 worth of quarters with me from his machine. When I explained my reason, he was like, oh, ok no worries.
