UK 50% silver coins from 1920-1946 were used in Hong Kong. Perfect for cheap fakes. Weight difference is negligible
Evan, those are excellent magnified images and the best guide to anyone asking for authentication opinions.
( . . .and that’s a GOOD thing?) (I was researching this “topic” earlier today..,) and it really does strike me how eBay and Etsy get away with selling counterfeit coins. (By saying “it’s not them.”) More can be done. A lot more. Do not punish the buyers: punish the sellers.
Those sites don't sell anything. Users of the site do. If you see fakes, please report them. It's only through the diligent work of ebay users like you and I that will get fakes taken down.
"Fakes" can be sold by calling them "tribute" pieces or by changing the design or date and calling them fantasy pieces (shades of Dan Carr!), or by just making them in countries that just don't care.
I felt safe buying on eBay. I bought turquoise through the mail, and when it arrived: I burnt it with a torch, and if it melted: GUESS WHAT: I got a refund. (Because they said it was genuine!) The BANK will back any person who buys counterfeit coins: The bank will make sure the buyer gets their money refunded. Etsy actually has no refund policy. (Which is illegal, but that never stopped anyone from smoking crack.) eBay and Etsy supports their sellers. “You saw a picture of the coin!” “You knew the picture of the coin was grainy when you bought it!”
Dann Carr does not make "fakes" or "counterfeits." Neither does the Grove Mint, the American Mint, or the Spit-in-your-face-and-like-it Mint. Many folks do not like what independent businessmen do in a "free-but-losing-it-fast" country. They need to get over it and mind their own business.
@H8_modern I am mesmerized by the quality of forgeries … in this case: how they got nearly everything right, (with the exception of the sheen —) If you have your receipt: your bank will get a refund for you. Try it. Does not matter the date. Try it. Selling counterfeit money is a serious crime. And some/[all?] banks go to bat for their customers. Do you have your receipt?
