I have not been pleased with the type coin I had in my set for the Capped Bust, Lettered Edge Half Dollar. I spotted this coin yesterday at the Lakeland coin show in Florida. It is an 1824 Overton 110, which is a common variety, but the it is nicely toned with no spots and strong luster. NGC graded it MS-64+. This variety is noted for a repunched 4. The die sinker punched the first "4" a little too far to the left and then corrected it.
It looks better in person. I just can't capture the toning and the luster in photographs. The NGC pictures make it look really dull. I did not go to the show planning to buy this coin. What sold me was the attractive toning and the fact that it didn't have any unattractive spots. There were a few other Mint State examples on the floor, but all them had something that made them seem average to me. Overall all, it resembles the 1799 Bust Dollar I posted a week or so ago. The difference is that this piece has full luster, as a Mint State coin should, while the dollar is a bit duller because it grades AU-55.
Wow! Nice score. The CBH section of mine is something I keep thinking about working on but have not yet. Nice to see an amazing example. Only 37 graded higher at NGC.
