I drew first blood when it comes to medieval coinage today.

Henry III of England (R. 1216 - 1272), was not exactly the picture of a successful medieval king. You could be fooled by his long reign of 56 years into thinking otherwise, but this Plantagenet king blundered from one disaster to another over his long reign.

Things didn't start out well for Henry, who was just a kid when his loyal supporters had to fight to maintain him on the throne in the First Barron's War. Things didn't get better in 1230 when he led a disastrous war against France, which caused a massive revolt at home which he had to put down at great cost. He followed this up with another disastrous war against France in 1242, which didn't do much to boost his already low popularity. Couple military disasters with terrible foreign policy blunders, such as the time he made a bid to place his son on the throne of Sicily, only to fail miserably, and you start to get the picture. Henry was plain hapless and unlucky.

I'd love to say things got better towards the end of his reign, but they didn't. Poor old Henry planned a crusade to restore his fortunes, and promptly had to cancel his plans due to a rebellion in Gascony. This led to Henry's barrons getting fed up and doing a coup, which eventually led to the Second Barron's War. Henry III, as usual was a military failure, and he ended up a prisoner of war in his own kingdom.:drowning: Henry III was eventually rescued from prison and lived the last few remaining years of his rule the same way he had prior to his imprisonment, full of failure, embarrassment, and misery.

So without further adieu, here is my new coin.

TONING ALERT!!! Look at that obverse...oh my God! :D:cool: If you love toning, that is almost an orgasmic experience. Too bad the reverse is not as impressive, but still, that obverse is to die for.

Update: Even though seller took my order, due to an error in his inventory he didn't actually have it. :( He made a mistake.

I am trying to work out a substitute, so please stand by while I resolve technical difficulties. I'll be back after a brief commercial break.

Lol, that's why I never post a coin till it's in my grubby hands.

But that sucks though, happened to me with that particular dealer before too, York Coins.

Hopefully he has something similar or equal in his inventory. Maybe you can choose a Russian coin, Catherine 5 Kopecks. At least thats what I like. :p

I need to get an Edward I for my sister, the genealogy nut, cause she clams we are descended from him somehow.

Be prepared to pay between $150-$300 for one. That's not bad though, at least you are not related to Cnut. That one would set you back a fortune. Don't even mention that name to your sister, because if she decides that you are also related to Cnut you'll have to take out a small loan to cover that one.

If you read further down in the thread, the deal fell through due to an error listing by the dealer, but I did manage to snag a better one with a killer provenance from him. See the thread "Never say Never Again (Henry III) Part 2 No, not James Bond". I managed to get a discount and free Priority shipping for my troubles.

Thanks. I actually got it today. I'm quite pleased with it, despite my earlier disappointment.

Edward I's are pretty easy to find - he reformed the coinage, thus a lot before him was melted down. Cnut's not bad either. The guys you need to avoid are Willim I through Stephen, and some of the earlier Anglo-Saxon Kings. Those'll cost a mint!
