Hi all going through my 1982 copper pennies and came across this. The reverse and obverse pictures are not the best but the others ones are. I took those my coin scope and then I took a picture with my phone. The scope does not show the whole coin on the screen. I hope these pictures are better than my usual. On the reverse I was wondering if this PMD or die deterioration, it would make good example to keep and learn from. Thanks for any help.
Like most of the "coin" microscopes for sale, the upright support is too short to get a full coin image, they are fine for close ups of relevant areas. But, taking a picture of the microscope screen creates distortion and pixellation. You should be able to save the image to your computer. Todays mobile phone cameras are very good, you can adjust the ISO, white balance etc. Support it on a coffee mug, adjust the lighting sources around the coin, get as much focus without zooming as you can, set the timer for 2 seconds to avoid camera shake and there you have it.There is no "one way" to shoot all as every coin has different colours, surface condition and reflectivity. JMHO. Your coin has a bit of die deterioration coupled with strike doubling where the die jumped or vibrated as it struck the planchet. The narrowing of the devices shows this.
Thanks so much for the info. I wish that the scopes would take the whole picture. It gets confusing between MD and die deterioration doubling. That why I come here and ask you guys. I will keep this for a sample of this type. Have a great day and thanks.
I just now noticed I put PMD instead of MD you probably thought I was going loco, some days I feel like I am. Thanks have a great day.
My son was helping me try that months ago with what we had at home. I will have to take measurements and go to the hardware store. Then I could take full size pictures.
A whole lot of nothing. But very interesting. I would just be so happy seeing a coin like that. Good learning tool
I took my microscope to ACE Hardware and they found me a long, threaded bolt that fit perfectly. I was then able to get far enough away from the coin to get the whole coin in the picture.
I've tried using my computer to scan coins and they come out lousy and I have used our "Jack of all trade" to take pictures and they too, come out bad. I'm really just a coin collector and do not like taking pictures. I thoroughly enjoy the pictures that are posted on Cointalk, but I will never be able to get pictures that are shown on board. Thanks to you all for the pictures that you take and show us.
