Is that a lion on the obverse? Pretty cool, I haven't seen one of those before.

Yes, Singh (lion). This type were minted c. 1830s and 40s. Many earlier AE paisas were much larger and had an elephant on the obverse. I see the asking price for these has gone up a lot recently.

Since U.S. coins are welcome, I'll post this one. There is a good chance that at least part of gold in this 1836 $5 gold came from France. The French paid off their debt to the U.S. Government that year for the Napoleonic Wars. The result was the mintage for the 1836 $2.50 and $5 gold coins was high compared to other years.

Since it's been a day, I really posted the 1836 half eagle so that I could post this, and 1835 sovereign.

The king is William IIII, "the sailor king." He was known as "silly Billy" when he was young because he was a poor student. His parents had him join the navy where he found his true calling. He was a good naval officer.

He lived with an actress, Dorothea Jordan, for 20 years, from 1790 to 1810 "without benefit of marriage." They had 10 illegitimate children together.

William's older brother, George IIII, had no surviving children. When he died, the crown passed to William. William never thought that he would be king. He married a princess, but they did not have any children.

Therefore, when he died, the crown passed to his niece, Queen Victoria. The story was Victoria was just short of her 18th birthday when the old king was near death. William hated the Duchess of Kent and her ambitious secretary who were looking to take advantage of the situation if they got control of the government. It was said that that "The king dies like old lion," until Victoria reached 18. He succeeded.

John, once again, I am just totally amazed at your collection, which puts many museums to shame. That first one really shines, William IIII Sovereign. I may as well upload another one...Nepal AR mohar, SE1757/1835, Rajendra.

We seem to be having trouble getting to 1834. I'll post another U.S. coin to get the date.

Here is an old style, 1834 Capped Bust Half Eagle. This design type is rare because 99+% of the mintage was melted. The coins were shipped to overseas almost as soon as they were minted. The European connection for this piece is that the gold in many coins of this type ended up in British and French gold coins.

This is the Plain 4 variety. The "Coin Facts" estimate is 37 survivors. It's probably a bit higher than that, but not by much.

It's not trouble getting to 1834, just that some of us have plenty of 1835 coins. It is best to wait at least 24 hours before jumping back a year, A? Here is a US 50 cent 1834. BTW, that half eagle is a gorgeous coin.
