My first was a 1904 Liberty Head $20 Gold Coin. Actually, it was one of the coins that started me out in my collection. It was RAW, but I thought it was beautiful. The dealer sent took it with him to a show and he said he could have it graded cheaper than if I mailed it in. I paid about $2,000. When it came back, it was graded by "NGC UNC DETAILS OBVERSE SCRATCHED" (Wouldn't you know it was scratched right on the cheek. The dealer offered to buy it back, but, I liked it and kept it. I was reading in a article about gold coins about the $4 Gold Stella selling over $60K. It is a beaut.
My first was a 1959 Mexican ten pesos. This was in 1966. I bought it in Mexico, but because of gold restrictions back then, I smuggled it out in the pop-up flash of my old Kodak Instamatic!
My first from a few years ago,I was quite specific when I went to the LCS.Pre-civil war and in decent condition.Still has some luster left, they even dropped it from $320 to $280 since it was my first.
I was going to buy one of those decades ago but I thought it was too expensive ... hmm ... My first "gold" was an 1 ounce American Gold Eagle. Always a safe and easy purchase.
I'll guess its a Bohemian Ducat. My first gold was found in a drawer. Its the coin in the image of my avatar. Found it when I went thru my moms closet after she passed. Never knew she had it until then. The first one I bought was a $50 American Buffalo.
The denomination is a solidus or one of its future equivalents. Not an aureus, lol. But a rather significant mint-made defect made the coin affordable. Would have been a four figure coin without it.
Eons ago, I purchased my first gold coin: a Mexican 2 Peso dated 1945. It cost $30 and it seemed exorbitant, and almost reckless, at the time. Now those little things, smaller than a Tum's tablet, go for well over $100.00. I still remember the shop I bought it from. It sadly no longer exists and the dealer passed away some years ago. When I pointed to it, he said, and I can still hear him saying, "Ah! Getting into gold!!" And I said, "yes, but cheap gold." The coin has sat in a vault for years, so I sadly haven't seen it for years. I'll have to visit it someday. I'll be curious to see the mystery gold coin reveal. You never forget your first.

I’m not quite that generous… but I’ve never done a giveaway of any kind around here either. Maybe I should.
My first gold coin was an 1854 Type II gold dollar. I bought it from my mother’s cleaning lady in the early 1960s. It graded VF, but it had a weak date, which often happened with the design, especially when the coin got some wear.
Well here it is. @lordmarcovan, you’re gonna love this one. Histamenon of Basil II, 1005-1025. This coin is nearly pure gold (about .970 fine) although the denomination was heavily debased throughout the 11th Century. This is a thin, 27mm coin weighing about 4.4 grams, with a mint-made planchet crack running through the coin (which also put the coin within my affordable range).
My first was a 1901 $10 eagle. I picked it up in early 2007, and sold it about a year later. I'd have to spend almost 4 times what I paid for it to replace it now.
Congrats, @Omegaraptor ! Not too many folks get ancient gold for their first gold coin! I don’t own any Byzantine gold bigger than a tremissis. Need to get myself one of those! BTW, my first gold coin was one of those “1915” Austrian 1-ducat restrikes. Cost $50, circa 1983-ish.
