Is it possible to have an inverted mint mark on top of a die crack? Did the die crack cause the inversion. The mint mark on my 1948 D is about 75% inverted below the surface. IMG_4150.JPG IMG_4145.JPG IMG_4150.JPG IMG_4145.JPG

If it were inverted, it'd be upside down.

Inverted under the surface is what I meant. Is there a specific term for that?

I don't understand your statement "Inverted under the surface" can you explain?

It looks like the mint mark sits in a dimple or a crater. This causes it to drop and sit below the surface. Only a small amount of the mint mark is above the surface. Sorry if I'm not coming across clearly

I'm not really seeing it... there may be a lamination issue but sorry, it's not there for me. I don't have much expertise in Franklins, however.

Thanks Seattlite. I'm still a rookie when it comes to coins. Am trying to learn as much as I can.

Ish - That's pretty cool. I've seen quite a few Franklins, however I haven't seen one like this. Very late die stage. The die crack that runs from the mint mark down into headstock of the bell leads me to believe it was probably one of the last coins to be stuck before the die became unusable.
I see what you're describing. Above the actual MM, to the left. However, I don't think it's an inverted MM. The serifs on the mark don't match the actual mint mark.
I'd suggest you contact Ken Potter for further evaluation. His site is http://koinpro.tripod.com/ and his contact info is at the very bottom of the page.
    Nice find!!
