These are 2 cent pieces I have and wondered why they don't seem to have much interest other than the 1864 small motto. Thanks! CAM00293.jpg CAM00294.jpg

2 cent pieces are one of those odd issues that doesn't seem to do much. Most collectors would like to have one, but when they get one...eh...that's enough.

I beg to differ if you want to see a collection of 2 cent pieces just ask PG to post his. His is one of the best I've ever seen in MS and Proofs. He's has put them on display around the country . I was given the opportunity to view them in person a few years back at the Baltimore show .
In fact he won an award at that show!
True many don't collect 2 's, 3's, half dimes and 20 cent pcs. But those who do are as passionate as a Morgan or Bust half collector .

Yea, PennyGuys collection is pretty spectacular, I had the chance to see it a few years ago I believe at the Baltimore show. I share his passion for the odd denominations. I spent many years assembling a proof three cent nickel collection and it is simply one of my favorite sets. I've also been working on proof seated half dimes, but that set has a very long way to go. The limited number of series collectors seems to have kept their value at bay over the years, but the small group of collectors that do collect them are pretty serious.

The value is in what you collect, not what you expect..........

They were inherited and purchased 25 years ago. I was expecting 10 cents give or take a penny :)

Don't forget, the general feeling is that coin collecting does NOT have much investment potential.
If you think that it's bad when coins catalog about the same after 25 years, take into account inflation.
Then you'll realize they have LOST value.

I'm a 2-center and have a 1872 business strike that I bought in 1990. It was MS-64RB in an OGH and came to me for $1500. I recall agonizing over whether to spend that much on a coin. It just upgraded to MS-64+RB. It's done way better than inflation. So a few twosies have been gainers. Wish I could say that for all my coins. Coin collecting is a hobby where if done right, you won't lose it all!

OGH = old green holder. PCGS slabs with green inserts used long ago. Dealers and auction houses will often mention that a coin is in an OGH because potential buyers often assume that it may go up in grade if resubmitted today. Did happen with my 2-cent, but one shouldn't count on it. Look carefully at the coin itself, always!

Yet for some reason I have two of them. When I am sober I'll take pics. Might even post them here too.

Here's the coin in its OGH. They were also called rattlers because the coin was not well-secured in the inner compartment and sounded like a baby's toy if shaken. With handling, the coin would rotate over time. This one went almost 90 degrees. I've seen coins 180 degrees rotated in OGHs. Now, it's firmly upright in a new holder.

That's a lovely piece and a very sought after date.

I don't think that is what is commonly referred to as the OGH, that is even better, a rattler.

The 1872 is a fairly scarce piece, and popular

I thought the 1864 small motto was the only one sought after. I guess I couldn't trade my 5 for 1 nice 1872? :)

I'm happy if something I bought is still worth what I paid for it.

I enjoy the 2s, 3s, ( Vs ), half dimes and 20 cent pieces. I prefer them over pennies, dimes and 25c pieces. I have a small collection of them, nothing as high grade as everyone here but I enjoy them and show them to my kids.

But I prefer 50, dollar silver, and gold pre33 more.
