What in this hobby do you find stupid, unnecessary, useless, etc? Guess I could start with my personal opinions: 1.) Decimal systems, of any kind, for grading coins. Includes the new 10 point scale, stars, pluses. Additionally, I think a 10 point MS scale is silly. Unc, Choice, Gem, done! 2.) Paying premium for RD, vs RB or BN coins of the same grade. 3.) Stickers...I don't need green or gold ones on my slabs to tell me it is a superb coin. That should be what my eyes are for. Any other opinions anyone would like to add or discuss, feel free to do so.
Free enterprise, the world is made up of greed and entitlement. They don't want to work for it they want it given to them, just ask any millennial. I'm the best TPG I know, and my eye appeal is all I need; my heirs can fight when I'm gone! Thanks for sharing @dimeguy.
Not sure if this is in that realm, but...sellers asking for more than 10% above spot on generally circulated coins. Slabbed, okay. Key & Semi-Key, alright. BU -- if it is a Key or Semi-Key, a little more. Otherwise, nope.
Expounding on #1 - the fact that we now have CAC to tell us which one-third of an MS grade the coin belongs in, even though there's already 10 available, yet there is no AU56, AU57, F17, etc.
The US Mint creating rarity by purposely limiting mintage numbers of certain varieties. Example, how many of us have holes in our ASE collection? I'll probably have more later, but this is the one thing I can think of now. Regards.
Same here. An Indian Head cent in MS65RD is usually much nicer than another cent of the same grade but with a BN designation. I‘d certainly pay more for RD coins…
Lot descriptions that sound like a poetry class or someone writing a romance novel. Oh and: "LOOK!" "WOW!" They are their own special brand of retard.
One more. I hear people comment that there's not many young people in our hobby. I see, at least In my state, many of our coin shows never having incentives for the younger generations to come. I have even suggested youth door prizes or youth raffles. I've even volunteered to donate the prizes, but I always get push back that there is no time or personnel and resources to run it. Maybe when I retire, I can volunteer my time to run one.
Nope . . . Would you pay the same for a week old sun-baked haddock as for one freshly caught an hour ago?
The collectors drive all of the above. If we don't subscribe to it, it would go away. All of my coins are in my collection based upon eye appeal. I don't know if they are better than those of others.
What is practically? If we start the same condition RD CENT at the same time: put one group in open exposure to air, put other group in sealed non-PVC plastic sealed food type container with abraded 100%copper foil or metal inside. Seal and put away both for 3 months, the difference will easily be seen.
Will it be RD for your entire life? Or for as long as you plan to have it in your collection? Seems to be the question ya gotta ask if you are debating whether to pay the premium.
NGC says "no." Their guarantee for copper coins expires after 10 years. PCGS is even less confident - they no longer guarantee copper color designations at all. I'll add another peeve - all the "get rich from pocket change" stuff. Sure, it stimulates the hobby, but the unintended consequence is a boom in people who don't bother to educate themselves and skip straight to "I'm rich!" over their 1982-D cent or their "no mint mark" dime. Virtually nobody gets rich from pocket change.
see i know that most people have no idea of this hobby just that either it's big bucks or the black market either way we can't change the opinions of the world but like anything in the real world the human factor is always at play again nothing we can do about that now think of why you all got into this hobby and focus on that and remember that reason and enjoy see for me as a collector i'm a very simple and plain collector never go for gimmicks , never go after labels, never go after status and have a wide range of collecting ideas i can use and collect what i want not what people think i should
