1921 Peace Dollar High Relief Grade Opinions wanted

Just won this on ebay. Paid $510. Thinking I made a good deal but never can be sure. The eye appeal and strong strike lured me in. Any opinions on grades would be appreciated.

She's a beauty. 63?

 

Not my favorite coin but it is what it is, I guess.
I'm a guesser at MS-62

 

She is a luster bomb if the photographs are truly representative. I think it is a steal at $510.00.

 

Looks promising, although I can't tell from those photos whether it's been cleaned -- it almost seems like there are signs of hairlines on the obverse. If not, it's better than the 62 I had, and I sold that one to a dealer for more than you paid for this one.

 

It looks cleaned to me.

 

Don't you think the typical weak strike at the center-obverse and reverse- would not be a subdued luster and more satiny dull, then?

This is not a Gem piece. It is typical Strike, don't you think?

 

I enjoy nice coins and your is no exception, congratulations and thanks for sharing. Easily in the MS-60's range.

 

My impression is that these photos are overexposed, and sellers frequently use that to hide the signs of cleaning. Hairlines in the fields mostly get washed out when the photo is this bright.

I may have gotten the impression of hairlines partly because of the lines near the rim at the obverse top, but those look like they're in relief, which would make them die-polish lines.

I see what looks like scrapes across the obverse rim around 3:00. If that's what they are, then on a high-relief coin like this, I'd check very carefully for similar scrapes on the high points.

On the reverse, there's some sort of blue staining around the eagle's head that doesn't look like natural toning -- it looks like either ink, or blobby post-dip toning. I see hints of it elsewhere on the reverse, too.

Bottom line for me is that these photos look over-exposed or brightened, and I've seen sellers use that many times to hide flaws. If that's true, it should be fairly obvious when you receive the coin, and Buyer Protection should have your back.

Edit: OK, I looked up the listing, and this seller is definitely one of the bigger photo juicers. Inspect the coin very carefully when you get it, and post photos here if you can.

 

Photos make it look nice but it may be cleaned to have that appearance. If it’s cleaned it’s a details coin. If it’s not cleaned then it in the lower MS-60’s bit it’s not a gem grade.

 

The 1921 Peace Dollar usually has a frosty, not a bright look to it. It may have been cleaned, but since they graded it, it's probably okay. My guess grade would be MS-63.

This one is in an MS-65 holder, but it's really an MS-64.

 

I'm pretty sure it's cleaned as well. And yes auctionkings is probably the biggest one to stay away from. Don't trust the guy or his feedback. If the coin gets returned any negative feedback left is removed.

 

I don't understand why people purchase from sellers like this on eBay. I scrutinize the seller before I even think about making a purchase.

As @Vertigo mentioned, that seller has been known to have less than ideal photos (enhanced colors for toners and other camera tricks for untoned). One should be cautious and not assume the coin will be like the photo in hand.

 

Coin should arrive in a day or two. I will post accurate pics and will return it if I'm not happy or if it's been cleaned. Stay tuned everyone@

 

That was the first thing I noticed. When the coin arrives I would check that area carefully; it may have been done to disguise a rim dent.

I've seen this seller discussed many times on forums. I chuckled at this current negative feedback - "I just don't understand how someone that has sold 323,000 items still has not figured out how to take a good picture of a coin!!".
