Hello everyone, found this 1916 SLQ in an EBay lot last month. It matches majority of the 1916 diagnostics only one it doesn’t match is the beads due to it being so worn. Unfortunately I ended up sending it to NGC not realizing they won’t grade dateless SLQ’s. This coin is pretty worn attached are pictures for thoughts. These photos are NGC photo vision. Which TPG would I have a better chance at getting it graded PCGS or ANACS?
I would not send it in to any TPG. It would not be considered for grading in my opinion. If I were to choose I would go with ANACS. Save your money, good luck. Welcome to CT.
That's about as slick as they come. This brings up an interesting question. I have never seen a dateless coin in TPG plastic. Does anyone grade dateless coins?
I tried to get PCGS to once grade a 1916-Something Merc dime. The rim had worn into the mintmark and it was little more than a blob.... As suspected, they bodybagged it.
Thank y’all for the replies. I just sent it off to ANACS in hopes that I can somehow get a Poor 1. If I can’t it’ll just go in my safe.
Nice find on the quarter - I would send to PCGS. I think PCGS grades at a 01. I didn't realize that NGC didn't grade dateless coins even though they know it's a 1916. What is the value of this 1916 at a 01 level ? $300 -1000 ??
I'm absolutely positive that I've seen dateless 1916 SLQs in TPG plastic. The diagnostics hold up a lot longer than the date does. The pictured coin sure looks to me like it matches the 1916 diagnostics. Get it confirmed by ICG, ANACS, or PCGS (no idea why NGC are counting themselves out here), and it's a multi-hundred-dollar coin -- and you can avoid re-triggering this discussion every time you haul it out.
That makes sense. Though they could have graded it genuine, I guess. Like a Type 1 dateless Buff - I could see the slab saying Buffalo 5C, Type 1. Or the OP's coin saying Standing Liberty, Type 1.
The difference there is that you can't reliably distinguish a 1916-D from a 1916-S if the mintmark is too far gone. On the 1916 SLQ, it's easy; no other date or mint has the same combination of drapery shape, hair shape, and reverse without stars.
You might also ask @Insider whether this is a coin ICG would slab. I'd imagine they would, unless there's an authentication issue I'm not aware of. (It's going to stink when our antipodal friends start striking and artificially wearing these...)
Thank you I’ll will look into it. ICG might be my next step after ANACS. I’ve seen 1917s graded as 1916s from ICG so my best chance might be to send it there. NGC gave me illegible date so I don’t think there’s an authentication issue. Just wanted to try the big 3 first
I’ve seen PCGS, ANACS, and ICG grade dateless type 1 SLQs. NGC seems to only grade a dateless SLQ if there is a trace of the last number making anything under an AG3 impossible to get graded
I didn’t realize that either until reading another thread on here. I’ve seen people pay up to $2500 even for poor graded 1916. Those were PCGS tho. Not sure what I could get for an ANACS or an ICG
the main purpose of grading is to increase value, I would think at best this would be a filler and not suitable for grading.
This is the biggest key date in a popular series, worth hundreds of dollars even in damaged PO1 condition -- as long as you can verify that it's a 1916, which you can, because of the diagnostics. Slabbing it locks in that verification. No PO1 specimen of this coin will show a date. In fact, neither will a FR2 or AG3.
I have a PCGS FR2 1916 SLQ in my Low Ball set of SLQ. All of the type 1 SLQs can get the grade of PO01 (No Date)
