Dear friends and colleagues !!!!!

As I promised you, and put a picture of my quite interesting and probably a rare coin. I bought it with a modest collection of other rare coins from Mesopotamia. I think that my coin is quite rare especially without the stars on the sides…...




MESOPOTAMIA. Edessa. Gordian III, with Abgar X Phraates (238-244). Ae.
Obv: AVTOK K M ANT ΓOPΔIANOC CЄ.
Laureate head of Gordian right, with slight drapery.
Rev: ABΓAPOC BACIΛЄVC.
Draped bust of Abgar right, wearing tiara.
BMC 161.
Condition: Very fine.
Weight: 5.37 g.
Diameter: 19 mm.

Its been partially out for some years, Volume VII, Part I.

AE34, Pisidia, Antiochia Mint, 25.23 grams
Obverse: IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANOVS AVG, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian right.
Reverse: VIBI AVG COL ANTIOCH, Gordian on horseback trampling down and spearing enemy, SR in exergue.

On this series of coins,we see Gordian in a pompous privileged manner, most often hunting animals. There are a rare series which show either one or two enemies lying on the ground already vanquished and dead. This rare example shows the enemy in the act of falling to the ground and his subsequent death. The horse rears up to trample the foe and Gordian has his spear at the ready to finish the job. The scene reminds one of the Fel Temp Reparatio series which would be issued about a hundred years later. Only a few examples offered in the past.

 

Gordian 3 also, but I do not remember that in the province. The weight of this coin around 18 gram…
