I think it's a shame that you guys who wanted this proof got squeezed out by people who now want to put a gun to your ribs to get one.
Um, I would've been one of the bad guys. I didn't especially want the coin, but I sure could've used the $800 profit. Guess I gave my karma a rest on this one. I'm guessing that the people who really wanted this proof, and had the means to pay the Mint's original offer price, are VASTLY outnumbered by speculators. I wouldn't be surprised if the aftermarket buyers at today's inflated prices are still mostly speculators, although I think they've got almost no chance of coming out ahead.
I sold mine on ebay yesterday for $2,000 (open box). There was $300 in cost: $200 to ebay, $65 to Paypal, $35 USPS. I might use my profit to purchase a 1917 Type 1 Standing Liberty MS64< FH or put it toward a 2011 Platinum Eagle Proof.

There are several other years that ended with lower numbers than the 10,000 max set for 2016. I wouldn't expect it to be quite as hot as last year's coin. That said, platinum eagles are trending nicely right now. The 2016 proof is nearly the same price as some past year's normal bullion coins...
I was referring to " American Eagle 2016 One Ounce Platinum Proof Coin" which had a "Household Order Limit: 1"
