I got this bill in change. At first glance I wondered what was spilled on it, but when I had more time to look at it, I noticed the watermark was quite visable on the face of the bill. What could do this? At what point is the pinkish/purple shading applied to the paper on a $5?

I had one just like this a few years ago (series 2006 though), gave it to the bank because I thought it might be counterfeit. (there were some other oddities with it, the ink was smeared and the green in the seal/SNs looked too light). Don't know who would counterfeit a five though.

Looks normal to me - maybe I'm not seeing what you are talking about!

It's laying on top of a normal note.

Discolored by foreign substance is my vote.....possibly grease or oily solvent.

What does a black light reveal about the stained area ?

I Thought that too. Its not oily in the least. Then i thought Coolaid, but would think the bill would have been saturated, the water mark is what makes it strange. The fives that are supposed to be to the left of Lincoln's portrait aren't there.
