Great, I love inventories! Started counting, but I realize now I forgot my Parthian bronzes, so it will have to wait another 12 hours. But I know the winner, that's the 7th century with the early Islam, the late Sassanids and Sogdians etc. About 100 Roman Empire, 60 barbaric imitations, 60 varied Huns, 45 Celts, of a total of about 600. I had thought it was much less.
OK, this is my list for gold/electrum coinage only... 700-600BC 1 600-500BC 1 500-400BC 2 400-300BC 4 300-200BC 7 200-100BC 11 100-AD1 6 1AD-100AD 4 100-200AD 12 200-300AD 14 300-400AD 31 400-500AD 36 500-600AD 43 600-700AD 21 700-800AD 15 800-900AD 12 900-1000AD 15 1000-1100AD 16 1100-1200AD 19 1200-1300AD 14 13300-1400AD 27 1400-1500AD 54 1500-1600AD 45 1600-1700AD 93 1700-1800AD 146 1800-1900AD 175 1900-2000AD 132 2000-2010AD ZERO John
Here's my gold-only list: 600-500 BC = 0 coins 500-400 BC = 0 coins 400-300 BC = 0 coins 300-200 BC = 0 coins 200-100 BC = 0 coins 100-0 BC = 0 coins 0 BC-100 AD = 0 coins 100-200 AD = 0 coins 200-300 AD = 0 coins 300-400 AD = 0 coins 400-500 AD = 0 coins 500-600 AD = 1 coin 600-700 AD = 0 coins 700-800 AD = 0 coins 800-900 AD = 0 coins 900-1000 AD = 0 coins 1000-1100 AD = 0 coins 1100-1200 AD = 0 coins 1200-1300 AD = 0 coins 1300-1400 AD = 0 coins 1400-1500 AD = 0 coins There is going to be a near zero projected growth in gold coins for the foreseeable future. Yayyyyy...
I decided to go silver because deep down inside I've always been a silver bug. I may add some gold down the road to my ancient coin collection, but I'm still going to like silver better. Even my gold college ring is in white gold because silver wasn't available as an option. If it had, it would have been silver. I even use a 10oz silver bar as a paperweight at the office.
That and 400-500 AD (this more so) are going to be my next gold goal, although it probably will be another year or two before I'm in a good spot financially to go after another gold coin. Unless @panzerman wants to make a generous donation of gold to my collection
I always, loved gold.... When I was a little kid, my parents gave me a "Grimm" Fairy Tales book, many of the stories involved witches/robbers/gold coins. Then, when we emigrated to Canada, I starting watching pirate movies/westerns, these also had treasure/gold and silver coins. But.....I now have started into collecting silver coinage too. Still have NO Platinum coins, hope to get one soon. John
I have always felt the same of gold. I have platinums. And, have several MODERN gold. Just only have ONE ancient gold.
My collection is mostly low end, total of 929 (Probably give or take a few, probably miscounted.) 600-500 BC = 1 coin 500-400 BC = 8 coins 400-300 BC = 12 coins 300-200 BC = 9 coins 200-100 BC = 22 coins 100-1 BC = 27 coins 1 AD-100 AD = 24 coins 100-200 AD = 33 coins 200-300 AD = 34 coins 300-400 AD = 167 coins 400-500 AD = 64 coins 500-600 AD = 12 coins 600-700 AD = 8 coins 700-800 AD = 12 coins 800-900 AD = 19 coins 900-1000 AD = 34 coins 1000-1100 AD = 29 coins 1100-1200 AD = 154 coins 1200-1300 AD = 223 coins 1300-1400 AD = 4 coins 1400-1500 AD = 13 coins 1500-1600 AD = 20 coins The reason I have so many coins in the 1100-1300 is because I own a ton of Song dynasty common as hell cash coins. I have 58 silvers, the rest are copper, or something like copper. Edit: The 80ish uncleaned 200-400 AD coins that are being delivered right now does not count, as they don't belong to me for another few days.

All this obsession with gold... I'm actually more of a silver fan. IMO, the color is more attractive and plus if you ever get attacked by vampires how are you going to defend yourself with gold?
I have a LOT of silver too (Modern and Ancient). I have never really fell for all the zombie, vampire, superhero comics, or other fantasy "schtuff" that has been enrapting people's minds over the last several years. I just love gold AND silver. Our wedding rings are White Gold from Scotland (European alloy) so I do not have to replate them every few years like the American style White Gold.
