Hi guys I need your help again for this Morgan 1882-S The coin is not in my hands, I only see photos, but the owner has some doubt about authenticity... and I'm not sure Diameter 38 mm., weight 26 gr. (not with precision instruments), it looks like silver, and magnet doesn't attract, but... the owner says that "the sound" of the coin is different from sound of other coins he has, surely authentic. It sounds like "wrought iron in the anvil", he says. I know it's difficult to explain a sound, but these are his exact words. So, I'm here for your opinions... authentic or fake? Thanks to all petronius
It is not a genuine O over S, if that is the basis of the question. It is not an S over S, either. As to authentic, a TPG 82S in 60+ can be had for $65-85. You may want to put a 5X on the area between the Eagle's left wing (facing you) and rim. The bottom left (7 o'clock )of the reverse image appears to be a seam. Other than that, I got nothing.
I think this coin is questionable especially with some of the claims the seller is making about it sounding different then others, there plenty of other fish in the sea.
I don't see anything glaringly wrong with it. Common coin in not great condition, but that doesn't mean the Chinese won't fake it. Judging it by the sound seems like an unreliable method, but it would be easy to spin it on a hard surface and record a short video of it spinning down. (I do not recommend any "ping tone test" on a higher value coin)
Without reading any of the replies so far and admittedly I haven’t thoroughly examined the coin, my first impressions were that it looked off. The details look fine to me, it’s the color on the reverse that looks strange. It’s a common coin in a low grade. I’d pass for another example just out of caution.
