    Hi All,

I would appreciate your input on this transaction. I compared these photos to guidebooks and resources, but I'm a novice and would appreciate an extra set of eye(s).

I just feel this transaction is potentially too good to be true.

The gold dollar is 100 dollars
The capped bust is 50 dollars.

It seems way in my favor, so that is why I am questioning authenticity. Though, nothing pops out as inauthentic.

Thank you for your input. I appreciate the learning opportunity.

    -Jason

It’s unlikely they’ll get a straight grade, but they seem to be authentic. I like the Bustie more, the gold dollar looks really off. Just one question: why would someone sell them for such a low price?

Every once in a while, if you're very very patient, you luck into a really good deal. It looks to me like you lucked into a really good deal.

I'm no expert in either series, but I don't see anything that screams fake, or even mutters it. Congrats!

The Bust half look pretty nice for $50. The surfaces look good. I would bet it's real.
I don't know gold dollars well enough to help but I know there were many fakes in 1855. I actually bought a fake, many years ago. The dealer took it back. Later I was told that the fake could have been worth more than the real thing.

I don't know about the gold, but the '23 half is real...an O-107 die marriage.

At this price buy both and even if the gold is bad you're still ok.

Question, though. Do you know the seller? Does he perhaps dabble in stolen property?

Limited knowledge, they might of inherited them but didn't do research and just need to make a few bucks quick. Also I'm thinking Facebook marketplace as this scenario seems to happen quite often and you can get some nice snags, both coins look authentic to me.

Replying to multiple of you. It is an instagram seller.
I asked for a reference before purchasing.
Maybe the prices are good because he is trying to get more transactions under his belt? Or, possibly he is going for quicker sales rather than looking to get the most for their product. Keep in mind, if he bought the gold coin for 75 dollars, he is still making a 33% profit at 100 dollars.
I took a similar approach to the stock market, if i wasn't willing to lose it all, I wouldn't have bought it. I have bought stuff no problem on instagram before, we will see what happens with this transaction.
Also, I doubt it is stolen property, just based on the sheer amount of stuff for sale.

I’ve never seen a Bust half in a decent grade (VF?) offered for $50. That’s too good to be true.

    Well, I can't say I wasn't warned!

Unfortunately, I was scammed. Zelle payment that can't be reversed. Totally my fault.

It's funny, I did a reverse image search on the photos to see if the "seller" was stealing them from somewhere else... and nothing popped up. So I thought it was okay. HOWEVER, hindsight 20/20... I googled his username and there was a reddit post about him being a scammer. I went to advanced on my research clearly.

Also, if you do an advanced image search, I guess it doesn't search instagram (just an FYI for anyone who uses that tool.

Lesson learned, I guess! Doesn't feel great, but there's always next time. Luckily, I will still be able to eat tomorrow without that money lol.

Thank you all for your advice in this matter. At least the coins were legit ;)

Also - for anyone who doesn't know, Zelle is treated like cash and CAN NOT be reversed. Please be weary.

I watch a lot of content on people who go after those scam call centers that target old people, and sometimes I ask myself how does anyone fall for this? But clearly, no one is immune, I'm 23 and up on technology and I still fell for it.

    Oh well.

Not that I like what happened to you, but THANK YOU for this followup. I certainly don't keep up with all today's marketplaces and payment methods, so it's good to get a warning about this particular combination.

Guess I'll stay away from Zelle -- unless I've got stuff to unload and don't want to become a victim in the other direction (buyer gets goods, then reverses the payment).

I may sound like a smartass now but remember what I wrote?

Stay away from Instagram. eBay isn’t as bad as many CT members say, as you’re pretty well protected as a buyer.

I'll say it again -- it is possible to land deals like this that are legit. I've done it on eBay. But you have wade through a lot of dreck and deceit to find them. I eventually ran out of willingness to spend the time.

    Name of the account?

I will put up a story on my Instagram naming and shaming the scammer.

You want to know how to spot a scam on Instagram? Here's three ways to do it.

    1. Check the "about this account" tab. If the account doesn't share what country it's based in you got a Cameroonian scammer.

    upload_2023-5-23_11-47-8.png

    2. Follow accounts such as @longislandcoin or @highdenomination. My reasoning behind this suggestion is that both accounts have had to deal with images from their accounts being lifted and appropriated by scammers. Following a legitimate account that has had its images frequently appropriated will help in recognizing a scam right off the bat.

    3. If feeless payment options like Zelle are listed in the account's bio good chance you're dealing with a scam. However, there are exceptions to this rule. In that case, I would advise checking for references from established members in the community. I have attached a typical example of a reference post below.

Fair enough. I had unfortunately done the deal prior to your comment. I think I was focused on the coins being fake, not the transaction being fake. I got caught up in the excitement of the deal. I have a hard time spending money on coins (I prefer to CRH because it is a "good deal", so I am discouraged that this transaction went poorly. My fault, of course.
@bullionaire_tick (they changed their name after my dealing). I also asked for a reference, which was @westside_silver who said they were a good seller! Clearly not.

If I may add something, hindsight 20/20 style.

    1) large follow count, not a large amount of likes/comments (engagement). Did you know you can "buy" followers? Both accounts (seller and reference) exhibited large followings but like 10 likes on a post.

    UPDATE REGARDING ZELLE

Called the bank. Said they would dispute it, but it was a 50/50. It was denied. I am not surprised, however it was worth a shot. Hopefully the email I zelled to will be flagged.

Again, it was 150 bucks so not the end of the world. But, it is souring.
