I am lost trying to attribute this nice little provincial Roman coin. 14mm 2.45g AE I am thinking this is Obv.: Bust of Apollo r. ; Rev.: ?? Artemis reaching for an arrow and holding bow ANTIO [??] Note: I am not sure if this is Artemis or Men? The left foot does appear to be sitting on something. This is obviously Antioch. But which one? The closest I have come to using a description search is McAlee 144a. But McAlee doesn't have a photo of this coin. It reads as follows: AE14 dichalckon obv.: ANTIOXEWN THC MHTPOpiO. Laur. and dr bust of Apollo r. (?). Rev.: ETOYC deltaPP. Artemis stg. r. with bow in l. hand and long torch(?) in r. hand. Butcher 365d (Athens 6098).

Thank you. I was scratching my head on that one. Interesting Rev motif. Liknophoros is a term that refers to a person who carries a basket or tray of offerings in ancient Greek religious ceremonies. It is also used to describe the basket or tray itself. The term is often associated with the Eleusinian Mysteries, which were religious rites held in ancient Greece in honor of the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone. During these ceremonies, the liknophoros would carry a basket or tray filled with offerings such as fruits, grains, and other food items. courtsey of AI..chat..
