So as I start delving deeper into silver, I began wondering if there was a way to buy Mexican Libertads directly from the Mexican mint like you can with Maple Leaves and Silver Eagles. If so, where do I go to do that? I realize I can get them second-hand from APMEX and others, but I was curious. Thanks in advance!
No, unfortunately. Here's some info about it: https://www.banxico.org.mx/banknotes-and-coins/new-libertad-series-silver-ba.html In Mexico, you apparently can buy them from the bank? Outside of Mexico, you need to go through authorized partners.
Unfortunately the Libertad situation is IMHO getting out of hand as greed quite naturally has showed its head. The ENTIRE mintage of proofs and rev. proofs are gobbled up by just a few retailers and then ceded out slowly at crazy prices which buyers are willing to pay. Secondary market holds just slightly for a while and then interest fizzles. But try to get these from a couple years ago as these proofs, antique proofs, etc. have settled out at the bottom of "enduser" stackings and are not available. As an example and although I am no big time collector, I have been trying in vain to get a Libertad RP 2018 1 ounce and since I will not pay outrageous price have not been able to get a specimen or the 2019 RP 2 oz. for that matter... Real collectors of such are about ready to get squeezed out I fear. Good luck in your enterprise!
I wish mints worldwide would establish reservation sales attached to random lotteries for the distribution of their products. That would be the most fair. But I guess "fairness" is not a motivating factor in producing such things...
The funny thing, Mark, is there are several easy ways known to find the market clearing price, including pre-order bidding. The GSA did that with the Morgan dollars in the 70s. I don't get why the various mints are so eager to transfer the profit potential to a 3rd party and make less themselves.
Absolutely and being a collector it really pisses me off. I only want a single coin of each for my collection and NO flipping...
