Here are some BIE cents I found. Most are 1957, so I’ll split them into two sets since I have more than 10 to share. Feel free to share your BIE cents!
It's a Die Break Error that's considered a variety. Same for Cuds. I think the Cents minted in the 1950's had the most BIE examples.
I agree with paddyman, very common in the 50's. Even though they are considered a variety they are still error coins.
They are errors, not varieties, coins struck with a broken die. Varieties are coins struck with a miss punched “RPM” or re-hubbing of a die “double die”. Lincoln Cent Die Breaks Called “BIE” : Cuds on Coins (cuds-on-coins.com) Hardy Index System : Cuds on Coins (cuds-on-coins.com) Error-Ref.com
Varieties include coins struck with a miss punched “RPM” or re-hubbing of a die “double die”. Even Cud-on-Coins call them varieties.
Nice collection. I had a BU roll of 1955 S Lincoln's and several had BIE and die chips on the reverse, so the 50s seem to be leading in that.
The Variety vs Error discussion is always confusing for folks, especially when the concepts cross over as they do for die chips like BIEs. I've read folks who try to explain them as "die errors" as opposed to "minting errors", thus separating out things like brockages, clips, etc from things like BIEs, cuds, and so on. I prefer just calling them "die chips" in order to eliminate the confusion.
