We have all been guilty of a mis ID when it comes to ancient coins... Its usually because they are worn and/or legends are missing and we revert to our trained eyes! Remarkably, even with these hurdles to jump, some experienced members on this forum can still nail the attribution..... Some rulers look very similar when portrayed on coins and so can often be mistaken for one another....I was experiencing this recently when sorting through a large group of several thousand antoninianus. Admittedly, the quantity and speed I was initially sorting them at were my biggest foes and under closer scrutiny and with experience they are relatively easy to tell apart...... I was about to take pictures of them for this thread, but then an 'experienced' ebay seller messed up and did it for me!! Post your often mistaken for pairings............... see the listing here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Ants-of-Victorinus-/152141379165?hash=item236c55365d:g:u-wAAOSwGIRXbCgI TETRICUS I and VICTORINUS
no so much for the looks, but the legend...MAXIMIANUS CAES, so the above coin must be gallerius. this coin is maximian...i'm pretty sure..but may be wrong here even.
Correct on both coins. The Max emperors get a lot more confusion than they would if everyone read every letter as you obviously did. There are some that are a bit harder like the 1/4 or 1/5 follis (depending who you read) below. The legend is simply MAXIMIANVSAVG but the coin is Galarius'.
