Please share your coins relating to the sea and sailors. Whether its a galley or any sort of symbolism that relates to the sea. Bonus points for a Sea Shanty...
There are many ancient coins showing sea related images I like this hellenistic bronze coin of Arados. It was a typical Phoenician city on a tiny island off the Syrian coast. Here is an aerial view of Arwad (its modern name): The coin, now : On the obverse, the Tyche of the city, wearing the mural crown. On the reverse, Poseidon reclining on a prow... 2nd c. BC
Neptune himself needs to make an appearance.... Claudius II, 268-270 IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG NEPTVN AVG Neptune standing, holding dolphin and trident.
You beat me to it, @Clavdivs ! I was going to post this great little coin of Caracalla showing a galley reverse which I recently won at auction and suggest the same theme for a thread. I was drawn to this coin because it seems to portray the ship 3-dimensionally in a really cool way...
Here is a coin with a great nautical story, from the age of world exploration and naval conquest: And here is a painting of that famous battle by Samuel Scott: Additional reading about this voyage by George Anson can be found here: George Anson's voyage around the world - Wikipedia
Hmmmm.... I have quite a few coins to add to this thread. Not ancient, but strong ties with the age of sail. Will post this weekend.
I had not noticed a Sea Shanty was a requirement Antiochus IV Epiphanes, AE denomination B (double), Tyre, 174 BC Obv.: Diademed head of Antiochus IV right, with heavy features resembling Antiochus III Rev.: BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ANTIOXΟΥ, LΘΛΡ, Stern of galley left Seleucid Coins (part 2) 1461.2 Tyre, you have said, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’ Your borders are in the heart of the seas; your builders have perfected your beauty. They have made all your planks of juniper trees from Senir; they have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you. Of oaks from Bashan they have made your rudders; with ivory they have inlaid your deck of boxwood from the coastlands of Cyprus. Your sail was of colorfully embroidered linen from Egypt so that it became your flag; your awning was violet and purple from the coastlands of Elishah. The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were your rowers; your wise men, Tyre, were aboard; they were your sailors. The elders of Gebal and her wise men were with you repairing your leaks; all the ships of the sea and their sailors were with you in order to deal in your merchandise. (Ezekiel 27:3-9) And now the Sea Shanty (sorry, it's in French, but it's by far my favourite sea shanty)
