Not a coin, but possibly the first illustrated collection in 1746. The Earl of Pembroke died in 1733 and it was decided to document his collection for posterity. No photography of course, but quite reasonable wood carvings were made of the coins, to the extent that a chipped, weak or irregular coin could be identified from the plates. 100 copies were printed in 1746 and referenced as the illustrations for the lots when the collection was sold in 1848. Many copies were cut up for the individual coins from the plates, but I was fortunate to acquire this rather nice bound set at the same time as the auction catalogue. There are 309 plates in total and the sale contained 1500 lots, for a total of £5905/14/11d
