I had never heard about this type before I saw it in the tray and asked about it. It’s a little bit rough and a little bit poorly struck. Here is the pic from NGC and some info. “1824Mo JM No coins are known with visible feather details on the eagle's breast” After this year, the design of the eagle was changed to a more upright posture and the cap and rays were made a little smaller.
I've seen them in various coin magazines. I have yet to acquire one, myself. Congrats on getting one.
Thanks. The dealer said he used to get them occasionally but hadn’t seen them much in the last few years.
as per NGC : mexico-first-republic-2-reales-km-373.4-1824-cuid-1118684-duid-1427016 No mention of this "hookneck" as being a special variety with an extra premium, however the lowest value shown is $90.00. I like it and I don't have one.....yet.
It’s not a variety, it’s the nickname of this first design. I learned that from the dealer about 2 minutes before I bought it.
Stacks Bowers world auction is selling some named collection of Hookneck 8R and they all seem to be 1k +
Congrats on the Hookneck! This is a very important coin, being the 1st design of the Mexican Republic. Hooknecks are extremely desirable & I only have the 8R's. On the lack of breast feathers on the 2 R's, this is true for many specimens as they circulated extensively --but not for all. Mexico, Hookneck, 8Reales, 1824, Durango mint Sorry for the slightly blurry photo, I still haven't gotten down image photography. Bought in 2007, before slabbing of foreign coins became prevalent. From the Hubbard & O'Harrow book on Hooknecks: "They obviously experienced long circulation. It is unusual to find a 2 reales of 1824 that still shows feathers on the eagle." Nonetheless, their book has pix of 2R's with breast feathers.
