Is, "I'll take neither and wait for a better piece" an option? Because that's what I'd choose. I don't know anything about these, and don't know if they are particularly rare in that grade, or if they are hard to find. But both of these pieces have problems. As long as you understand that and choose which problem you prefer, then you'll do ok.

Piece A has much nicer color and original patina. However, those major hits to the face are an absolute killer for me.

Piece B has definitely been dipped and stripped - that bright gold color is not original patina, and kinda looks too shiny. It also appears to have a bit of rub on the top of his head and sideburns. Less major marks in obvious places, but I don't like the color of this one as much.

So, either pick which problem you prefer, or wait for a third option. I know which one I'd choose.

Nicholas has fewer shaving cuts on Coin B.

I would pick coin B since the hits/cuts on A's cheek stick out more than the scattered hits on B.

It also looks like coin A is NGC while coin B is Anacs. Normally I would figure the coin in the NGC slab would cost more at the same grade even if it looks worse unless you have a more specialized seller or one that prices on eye appeal.

If you are not in a hurry to buy, then the advice of waiting for a better option should be considered as well.

In a vacuum, you’re absolutely correct but in this case there are extenuating circumstances.

    1. The dealer is a friend who recently discovered a health problem.

    2. The 15 rouble pretty much doubles once you hit UNC grades and I didn’t want to pay that much.

    3. The color isn’t as bad as the quick pics at the show would lead you to believe. These are a little better.

The guesses were correct- Coin 1 is NGC and coin 2 is ANACS.

    Both coins are AU-58.

Coin 2 came home with me.

#2. Hits on face of #1 unacceptable for me.

    B. The ANACS hold may have swayed me the other way though.
