Bearing mind the differences in photo quality, which do you think was the better deal?

  1. PCGS VF30 ($800 ask, $725 negotiated) - professionally photographed

There are surprisingly more colonial coppers available then you might think. Though higher or "clean" grade can be very hard to come by with prices to match... on the other hand no, you can't just find a dozen for sale and choose the one you like but a few of each type cross the auctions most months :D

They’re easier to find than you might think but higher grade ones are very difficult to find.

The PCGS example looks to have better surfaces, but a mushy looking date.

The NGC coin is a little rougher, but a nice clear date.

At the end of the day, I’m not getting “wow” eye appeal out of an issue like this in a price/grade I can afford. I’m buying it for the history, so between the two I’ll take a nice clear date at a lower price at the expense of a bit of surface quality.

Both look priced properly. The NGC coin has slightly more wear, even though graded the same. So I will nor argue anything other than high VF30 and low VF30 in the price grade continuum. Easiest to notice on the pants.
