Finally I'm making some progress with the rarer emperors of my portrait series. I scored this entry level but reasonable Gordian I Africanus from Dr Busso Peus:

    gordian I.jpg
Gordian I AE sestertius. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AFR AVG, laureate, draped & cuirassed bust right / PROVIDENTIA AVGG S-C, Providentia standing left, leaning on column, holding wand & cornucopiae, globe at feet.

So now i only need Gordian II from the Year of the Six Emperors and I have a 238AD set!

GI and GII were Roman co-emperors for one month in 238AD, in opposition to the reviled Max Thrax. For a one month reign, there can't be too many coins. But if you have them post them ... And if you don't have them, well, we can never get tired of seeing more amazing coins from the grandson Gordian III.

Entry level? I think not. It's hard to find anything from this guy. Congratulations.

More than a "reasonable" example, I'd say. Well done and congrats!

Considering I focus on silver, and a silver set of Gordian I and Gordian II would run me around $7,000 - $10,000 in VF, I don't think I'll be buying them at all. I could build a very substantial collection for the price that it would cost me to get those two coins.

Anyway, that is a very beautiful example of a Gordian I. Congratulations on obtaining such a fine specimen.
