It's been a couple of days now and I've stopped drooling over that Odoacer coin of @Valentinianvs so it's time to show the second best buy I've made over the years. I was looking through a well-known dealer's odds and ends many years back and came across a little bronze that simply said "unknown Greek coin" on it. I only had a somewhat passing knowledge of Greek issues but it just didn't look like anything I've ever seen. I was just starting to concentrate on the later Roman issues and it appeared to be an odd monogram, but I wasn't sure. I told him this doesn't look like a Greek type and was maybe Roman. He insisted it was Greek and said it's been sitting around for a year and nobody wanted it, but I could have it for $20. I took a chance and bought it. Here it is: I think the late Roman guys can figure this out pretty quickly. Any best buy stories out there?
Nice. Is it small? Looks like one of these Dark Age uncouth barbs (I like them!). The reverse is like a monogram.
I know who it is but I'll let someone else take this. That being said, I wish I could be as lucky as you Brian, and like Valentinianvs and the other specialists in these coins.
Beautifuul coin @Brian Bucklan , I know the story of this coin, you told me by email when I bought a coin from your store (may be you remember me, Ricardo Veltri, from Argentina ) I want to find this monogram some day... one of the hasdest ever!
You wouldn't happen to be a seller on eBay would you? I think there is one there with your username and from Argentina.
Ricardo! I didn't know this was you. Great to hear from you. It's been quite a while. And if you ever find another decent Odoacer please let me know.
I was under the impression you had an Odoacer. Not that you wouldn't want an upgrade but I figured you had one or two already.
I have two, but I am not proud of either. The one owned by @Valentinianus is about as good as it gets.
Yes VK! I usualley sell on eBay, under this same nickname! Nice to talk to you again! You know me since Im a begginer in the coins of the fifth century! You are really a lucky with this BEAUTIFULL Jovinus!! Really.. NICE!!
This is one of my best buys, from @Brian Bucklan , another rarity, Basiliscus and Marcus nummus monogram: Basiliscus and Marcus, 475-476 AD Nummus, minted in Cizicus? Obv.: DN bASIL ET MARC PF AVG (or similar), draped bust right. Rev.: Monogram of Basiliscus and Marcus. RIC X 1034
And I'm the sad squirrel looking at the two other ones selling Odoacer and Anthemius coins with each other. Oh wait I am blind so at least I am spared that sight
Lol I was wondering when you had this coin for sale. It's cool though. Even better knowing it went to a (now) fellow forum member
