Eventually I bought my first 1820 Bustie. Note there are 6 major varieties for this rather scarce year. I’ll start a GTG thread soon, also asking about the variety. Stay tuned. @okbustchaser - please don’t tell @Evan Saltis - watch out for the GTG thread @Seattlite86 - thanks ;-)
Four new half dimes for the Capped Bust set. There are 124 die marriages in this set, minted from 1829 to 1837. I now have 90 coins with 73 different die marriages.
Well, I had been wondering, "why has @Publius2 been so quiet lately?" But after chatting with him today I figured something out about this forum: if you search for "half dime" it doesn't show you posts that say "half dimes" (plural). So I'd missed this progress update on his new baby busties. Good to know! I don't have pics of my newest coin yet but I'll talk about it just to kinda adhere to the topic: capped bust half dime 1832 LM-10.4, estimated AU Details Cleaned (raw coin). Pics to follow if I remember...
I’m afraid it will stay a mystery. There’s just nothing there. Here are a few more angles with oblique lighting
Yeah in the first pic and one other I’m seeing the ghost of a 21. Too straight for a 7. Could be the leg of a 4 though. But maybe I’m just tired and seeing things
If you haven't already, I suggest people here might be interested in viewing @bikergeek's third-rated PCGS Registry Set of Capped Bust Half Dimes by die marriage. Not only is he a mere five coins away from a complete set of 124, but his coins are pretty amazing in both grade and appearance. All done within about three years. In the process, he has made himself pretty much an expert on these "baby busties".
These are crappy eBay photos but if you zoom in you can see the light reflecting at different angles revealing some of the toning.
Thanks for the good words, my friend. I've appreciated sharing info and opinions back and forth with you! And now since you prompted me to remember, here are my pics of my newest. I went almost 3 years without finding an 1832 LM-10.4 in the wild. In recent weeks I've found two of them (both with issues). I won't stop looking for the one with the big cud - but the die state here (especially on the "OF A" and along the top of the scroll) is pretty dang cool.
