eBayer has been advised that his / her 1865 half dime is not real, and is not taking it down . . . Also reported to eBay over 24 hours ago, and no action on their part.
It just looks completely wrong and some pictures for a $100+ coin. Also the seller didn't bother to crimp the staples and take proper pictures.Im quite concerned about the other 5 sells, looks like a fishing operation.
Reverse is most obviously fake to me, if only because the obverse photo is less focused. Status is given away by the design and characters on the reverse being "swollen", and the relief of the design at 9:00-10:00 where strike is always inadequate for this date. On the obverse, the number of "horizontal" stripes in the shield appears to be at least one fewer than on genuine coins. (Edited: 9:00-10:00 was 10:00-11:00)
I'm seeing the same thing on the reverse. The letters in HALF DIME look fat. I ask the guy for more images.
I'm curious to know also. If eBay does not take it down, they may have resolved the issue in favor of the seller.
Looks legit to me. I wouldn't look beyond the return policy though. I would never spend that much money for a coin that I couldn't send back.
There was no backhanded comment. You asked what makes someone think it is fake and another person replied "the seller didn't bother to crimp the staples and take proper pictures". I'm curious why that has anything to do with the authenticity of the coin. I've bought and sold many millions of dollars worth of coins over the years and never once have I used crimped staples or poor quality pictures as part of the authentication process.
So your saying you would buy this coin based on these picturesand pictures don't matter for authentication because if so that's completely wrong. Pictures are one of most important and key aspects when buying and selling coins online(i sure wouldn't buy this one as is).Yes the staples part isn't with the authentication process but it shows the laziness of the seller even as a counterfeit that could of been a $1,000+ coin if real.A single scratch from a staple could ruin a similar coin and scratch tens of thousands, happened to few members on here as i recall before.
