I believe it may be copper compounds, after the buffalo was treated with ferric chloride to try and etch the surfaces into appearing as a sharper image ( usually to tell a poor date visibility. If it is left too long, this coloration often appears from the ferric reaction. IMO, Jim
I understand what you mean, but I don’t think it was acid dated. The date has depth, which, in my experience, is lacking when acid dated.
Could just be environmental, but really can't tell from that one photo. It would help us if you post photos FULL IMAGE.
