Ok, here is one I have never seen before and not even rumored to exist. It is a Bahamas 1984 Franklin Mint struck currency uncirculated 25c coin. I am not certain of prooflike status or satin unc. But appears to be of the latter type and NOT a proof. The proofs are somewhat scarce with barely 1000 struck. I looked carefully and dies that struck this coin DO NOT MATCH the proofs. This coin somewhat reminds me of the Liberia 1984 uncirculated FM pieces in 1,5 and 10c denominations which have previously been posted. Sorry for the lines in first pic as I took picture of internet photo
Without knowing what varieties they struck, I'd say this coin looks like a toned proof. Curious about the differences. I suspect they used multiple dies over several years for the non-dated side.
I have two proofs of the 1984FM 25c and many of the details like the wavelets, rigging do NOT match up. The reverse (coat of arms) has some central detail contrast similar to proofs but that is it, the lettering and border beads (dots) do not on either obverse or reverse. Even details such as the motto are not struck to the proof standard and do not match the proof "controls" that I have. Surviving information about Franklin Mint issues after the 1982 Krause FM catalog is very scant. So none really available. That is the issue for Krause and other derivative sites such as Numista - information is not confirmed and figures like mintages are not reliable and/or which mint sets or currency may exist, especially for the 1983 and 1984 years. The Liberia example to which I refer demonstrates this exactly. Although recorded for 1983 AND 1984 nobody has ever seen to my knowledge 1983FM Liberia 1c, 5c, or 10c. The mintages for the 1984 denominations is stated but probably unreliable (see other posts where this has been discussed) with very few likely entering circulation channels and most only available through the Franklin Mint "Coins of the World" series that they issued, possibly only utilizing Liberia coins that did not get shipped to the destination; a very few with some on ebay may have actually circulated, or at least appear to have. With regard to this coin, I will try if possible to get in-hand photos that should reproduce better. I have seen quite a few FM pieces of different types and strikes and a very few patterns, so maybe would be able to somewhat consolidate the designation. If this is a currency as it appears, it may have come from any source, including the Bahamas or?
Here are pictures of a proof, and as usual sorry about photo quality: As you might see some of the points of difference if liking carefully.
I saw this coin on ebay and was curious about it as well. The fact that ANACS called it MS is certainly interesting, but I can't decide whether it might be PL or matte from the pictures given. However, now that you mention it, it does remind me somewhat of my 1984-FM Liberia 10c. Here are the original images:
Yes, I am going to check it out. I think a big one is the details that I had mentioned - I am not totally confident in ANACS, NGC, or PCGS in grading and in fact just had to send another 2 coins back to "N" as they had it wrong (I was the beneficiary). But I really "micro" looked at the wavelets, the figures on the boat, the rigging and even the edges and beading. I guess the sailboat side is actually the reverse, but that is more determining, or at least as much as one can tell from photos. The motto on obverse shield is an example on obverse, but there are others. As you say, in hand will help to determine I should imagine.
Ok here are in hand photos of the coin in question and the proof version still in set card. I took in bathroom light and natural sunlight. My opinions to follow:
