Somehow I missed the tag. But I did make it here in time it seems. I'm pretty sure my Overton variety was right. The grade is always tough because different years/overtons wear differently. And the grading services always vary. Even amongst themselves.... I'm saying 108 based on the T/I alignment and the fact star 7 touches the milling. VF but not sure where although I voted 30
Thanks for all the great comments! Most of you nailed the grade and variety or were pretty close. Advice: Those of you who are unsure, compare the T/I alignment and also look at the (Unite)D/E location of both O-106 and O-108. O-106: O-108: I’ll reveal the grade/variety tomorrow.
Time is up… most of you did an excellent job! Yes, it’s the O-108 not the O-106 but… BUT… it was graded VF30 which only 3 of you guessed. Interestingly 13 members voted for VF35, XF40 and even XF45. Now I know you know your coins and are pretty good at grading from pictures, so I believe - considering today’s standards - this coin may grade slightly higher
The trouble is, you can compare with coin facts and see two very similar coins in different grades. Even both being pcgs coins. Bust halves are hard to even guess what pcgs might call them. Strike quality from one die to the next can change the grade from 30 to 35. I have some with that much variation that look like either grade. Because when you compare you can see a 35 that looks like a 30 or vice versa.
That’s right. Looking at the pics again, I believe this coin was downgraded for the scratch (it is a scratch?) on the obverse.
Nice 108. I think it's than 30 (and said so with my pick). Interesting fact about the 108 is that it is a doubled die reverse--the only one in the capped bust half series.
Yes that mark on the cheek? It doesn't look deliberate and it is nearly as old as the coin itself. But the obverse yet and still. It is still a very nice looking coin.
I meant the imperfection on top of the 8 of the date. I am not sure what it is, as I haven’t seen the coin in hand yet.
