It looks like it’s had something done to it beyond simple circulation. Unless is cheap, just beyond melt, I would pass. When it comes to gold, stick with certified pieces. Is there something special about the year 1843? The later dates from the early 1900s are easier to get in high grade, and grading often seems to be on the conservative side. You can find nice pieces in the 1850s too.
Here is an 1853 $2.50 that NGC graded MS-62. This is a common date. And here is a better date and mint mark combination, 1843-D, that PCGS graded AU-58.
Honestly, it looks cleaned (Color looks off), if it's not I'd agree it's AU-55+, but from the photos it does look cleaned, if it is it's probably AU details.
Thanks for all the comments. I agree, it looks cleaned. It was in a clamp bezel that I've removed it from, so maybe it picked up a lot more contact marks from other jewelry items? Anyways, I'm in it at melt and am going to sell it. Wanted to crowd-source some opinions as at AU there is quite a price bump, however the cleaned designation will negate the otherwise good condition.
