Yes it’s an error but I’ll not say so newer collectors can learn. First year of the zinc cents as well.
Definitely off center struck. I'm confused, though. How does the strike not depress the rim? As I understand it, the planchet goes through the upset mill prior to being struck... was this rim somehow raised/restored post-mint?
Off center nice,it's not the 1983 copper some zinc is visible and how would you weigh it in the slab without breaking it anyway.
It depends upon the angle of the planchet in the collar when the strike occurs. It can tumble in various ways.
This looks like the dies themselves were off-center striking only that portion of the planchet while leaving the remainder of the planchet un-struck.
Yeah, it is an off-center strike. PCGS called it 40% off center. I agree that it is approximately 40-50% off center. These errors are fairly common—usually, as the planchet tumbles into the press, it lands partially in the collar, or sometimes, even completely out of the collar that restrains the blank, for its meeting with the die pair. It can also happen with misaligned dies as well. Suffice to say, the dies only strike a certain percentage of the coin’s image on the planchet. In this case, it is still recognizable as a coin. Error collectors ideally want an off center strike of 30-50% of the coin, as it is a good balance of visible error, and intact coin. PCGS graded this one as MS 64.
The more I look at it the more it looks like the transitioning of the moon/sun during an eclipse. On June 11 1983 a total moon eclipse occurred. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar... solar eclipse at,Sunday, December 04th, 1983.
Well, just because you are posting for new learners, it was the first FULL year, but zinc cents started half way through 1982. Just trying to set the record straight.
You’re either a very technical person or the drugs I’m on are working to well. Wait until after my surgery. Lol
LOL, the drugs are working too well, or really awful, depends on how you look at it. Being an old retired teacher, I just want those entering our world to have the correct facts, thus my post. Members here are just lucky I don't go full proofreader on them. LOL
