Hi friends, It's late sunday here, and prior I go to bed and start a new busy week I would like to share my second acquisition from the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli collection (after the M. Plaetorius M.f. Cestianus denarius you've already seen) : a L. Flaminius Chilo denarius Not the L. Flaminius Chilo who struck coins in his name showing Ceasar's portrait, unfortunately, but the one minted a few decades earlier, a nice denarius on which I jumped during the live bidding because no one had bid on it and it was at its starting price. I find the biga, espacially the heads of the two horses, very lifelike, and love the overall look of the coin. L. Flaminius Chilo, Denarius Rome mint, 109 or 108 BC Helmeted head of Roma right, ROMA behind head and X below chin L·FLAMINI/CILO in two lines at exergue. Victory in prancing biga right 19 mm, 3,83 gr Ref : RCV # 179, RSC Flaminia # 1, Sydenham #540, RBW # 1144, Crawford # 302/1. From the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli collection Thanks for posting anything you find relevant (I'm not as liberal as Steve on that subject, but any Gens Flaminia coin, or even RR is welcome ) Q
El Flamin' Chilo => best advertising name ever!! => get on your horse and get yourself some El' Flamin' Chilo
RR Flaminius Chilo 109-108 BCE AR Denarius ANOTHER one I have (agreed with @stevex6 ... Flamin' Chilo!) RR Flaminius Chilo 109-108 BCE AR Denarius (again!) And how about I leverage off the FLAMIN' namesake: Roman Republic T Quinctius Flamininus 126 BCE AR Denarius Obv: Helmeted Head of Roma, * (XVI monogram) below chin, Apex behind Rev: Dioscuri galloping r., T-Q devided by Makedonon Shield below, ROMA in ex Ref: Sear 143, Crawford 267/1 Comment: T. Quinctius Flamininus was ancestor of and the same name of the Moneyer who was victorious over Philip V at the battle of Cynocephalae in 197 BCE. Makedon became a province of Rome. Personally, the reverse always reminds me of the Dioscuri playing Polo using a big-As ball.
Nice coins. I bought a nice one of these. I liked it so well, I posted it on my blog. http://rrdenarius.blogspot.com/2014/01/my-thoughts-on-coin-selection-pinarius.html Unfortunately I bought it from Freeman & Sear, or should I say Freeman. It never arrived. I have refrained from buying another.
